I received some guns from my dad when he passed, and it took me about a year but i finally bought my first one. Its a Kimber Custom 1911, and i got some wilson combat mags to go with it. I couldnt be any happier the first clip i shot was all dead center, what a great gun thanks to everyones reviews out there, i get to enjoy this piece now too!

What an awesome first gun. The only thing is I don't like those grips, to hollywood for me lol.

But seriously that's a beautiful gun!

nice gun, ditch the grips, lawyers will chew you up if you ever have to defend yourself.

edit
and i typed that when i thought it was a cheesy bird! now i see the skull! whoa-

I didn't see it for a while even after cyclopsshooter pointed it out. It's a double image -- a bird or a skull. Much like the double images that often appear in the paintings by Dali. I would keep the grips -- I think they make the gun even more interesting.

The double image is very clever because it can be seen as a skull when both grips are together as shown in your last post or when looking at just one grip. Here's an example of a skull by Dali:
Deleted Non-THR appropriate image... <Sam>

mag. not clip.
If we are going here then its a weapon not a gun.

Get yourself some nice simple Kimber grips, keep this piece factory yo. Fancy grips spell cowboy in a self defense situation. While I see the skull, this is cheesy IMHO and belongs on $500 pimp gun, LMFAO, and depending on what you want this piece for...mine are for practical purposes, if its for show keep the grips on it. You'll want them checkered so you can hold this beast with sweaty hands!

A brilliant choice, shoot often and shoot with a purpose. Plinking is only fun if you are aiming!!!

Welcome to the Kimber crew!! Do us proud! Lets have some range reports and feedback, positive or negative.

Peace

dang when did wilson change their baseplates to that ugly setup? I always ordered the thin/lo pro steel basepad ones. I had a plastic one give up on me once seating it (aparently too hard) on an open gun...but it was an older wilson mag and the basepads are dirt cheap to replace...just sayin...they don't look as purdy as the last ones I bought (which granted was several years ago)

You got the right mags though...wilson 7 and 8 rounders are the way to go IMHO

Hogue makes (or made?) a set of standar looking pannels in checkered rubber that where like 1/3 thinner than standard...I really liked those on mine...also ran some simonich highly textured G10 grips a while...the $20 hogues where just about as good and carried better I think.

I'm not saying this is wrong but I haven't been able to find any trial where the decorations on the weapon were used as evidence by the prosecution -- anyone know of any such case?

I qualified my statement with "IMHO"

Well, I grant you that I do not have any particular case study to present but when you consider that after a criminal trial involving a shoot there may be a civil suit in which a jury will be looking at a crying family and your nickle plated gun with punisher grips while listening to the opposing attorney go off on his rant...

But then again, jurors are highly educated on the nuances of firearms are are almost always pro 2A and never watch hollywood stereotypical gangtas with fancy pimped out guns... never-mind that most bad guy guns are crap like davis, jenning, bryco, and the such...

go ahead and keep your grips-

Its just for show, i have a 12ga that wont miss in case of protection. Im 27 and still think the look is cool especially because it is on such a classy gun. Thats why i did do it. The grips are stainless with the skull being gold flake, obviously not real gold, but nonetheless not plastic. I have taken it to the range and put 100 rounds through it and i simply can not believe how insanely accurate it is. My friend who has a nice collection fired it and within 3 days he went and got one too! What an awesome gun!

Nice Kimber! Congrats. I have a friend with the same model, it's performed flawlessly.

I'm not even going to get in on the conversation about grips and court. I personally like nice grips and I'll take my chances. Although I can see where advice on getting nice, non flashy grips is good advice.

My friend has your same model with these grips. Wicked Grips makes some of the nicest looking grips I've seen. Stunning in person. I prefer checkered grips with more bite on my carry piece, though. The downside is checkering makes exotic wood look a little less exotic IMO. I like aggressive checkering. I have a gen4 Glock that I feel is way too smooth for my tastes, yet people on Glocktalk comment about how abrasive it is. One of these days I'll give in and order a custom pair in Desert Ironwood for my Kimber and have them half checkered.

I have a dew. Don't knock em till you try em. I thought that at first, but I like the newer basepads better after using them and sold my old mags with the older baseplate.

IMO the whole issue with firearm model names, images etc on firearms used in self defense becoming an issue is all internet hype.

Now if you go all Charles Bronson vigilante then I can see it being an issue.

Nice 1911 BTW. If you like the grips keep em.

Actually, that is you. Keep practicing, start going to IDPA or take some formal pistol training and you won't believe how much more "insanely accurate" that pistol will become...

Gold isn't my thing, but that's your gun and you do what you want with it.
