Did you use the Automatic Transmission Fluid as suggested above? If so, how did you use it and what were your impressions of it?

I don't have any experience with it so these questions are at least naive, and perhaps just plain dumb. How would it work in an ultrasonic cleaner? Is it a fire hazard and flammable? Does it evaporate quickly? Is it hazardous indoors?

ATF is basically a light weight oil with several different additives.

I wouldn't use it in a ultrasonic cleaner. Most people use it as a penetrating oil.

Most ultrasonic cleaners say to use water or solvent.

Thanks Deer Hunter and CZguy.

I might pick up a can of that PB Penetrating Catalyst. I'm a sucker for anything with a yellow, red, and black container and "As seen on TV" label. :)

I once had to break apart a Remington 1100 that hadn't ever been cleaned either. If that stuff can do it, it's worth having around just in case there's another.

But I won't use it in my ultrasonic cleaner thanks to your cautions.

Trust me, they take care of their vehicles. Her dad could probably dissassemble a car and put it back together blindfolded.

I can't wait until she gets to shoot it again!

When their house flooded, guns weren't the first thing on their minds. A foot and a half of water in the house, he had to get a lot of stuff done before he messed with the guns. When he finally got to them, he simply tossed them onto his bed and left them. My girlfriend didn't even know he still had her gun (He's had to sell a lot of them).

That PB Blaster is GREAT stuff. Its works when EVERYTHING else will fail.
I will also second the use of ATF. I have been turning wrenches for a long time and have been in the transmission business for about 3 yrs. That was a very good suggestion.

I am glad you got your hands on that shottie. Good job on getting it cleaned up.

Keep us posted on how it works.

The ATF I suggested would have saved the "O" rings, the stuff you used probably swelled them and made them soft. They will fail for sure now and I suggest you replace them before you shoot the gun.

I'm glad to hear you were able to clean up her shotgun. I hope she appreciates your efforts.

I didn't soak the O ring in the PB solution, I knew it would probably mess it up pretty badly.

I test fired the gun last night. It ran like a top. There's a plug in the gun which limits a 1+1 capacity, but it was able to run through two shells flawlessly. Even dad got in on the fun. I'm taking it to bust some clays this morning pretty soon.

Reminds me of a Darwin Award canidate. Smoking a cigarette and using a styrofoam cup with a hole in the bottom to pour gasoline into a lawn mower.

Shot clays with it today. Hit every clay that was sent up in the air, but sadly a bit into the shooting the gun stopped ejecting shells. After working on it a bit, I see that the problem is the Oring. It's way too loose and rotted out, so I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow when I give the gun to her.

Even a new 1100 or 11-87 wears out o rings. I always change mine every 800rds or so whether it needs it or not. 90 percent of most malfunctions with the 1100/11-87 are caused by worn or broken O rings. Make sure that there aren't any burrs on your magazine tube. That can cause some premature wear on those o rings. The O rings are fairly inexpensive and you can buy them from brownells for fairly cheap. I think you can buy them in packs of 12. I hope you've counseled your girlfriend about proper gun cleaning and maintenance to keep this tragedy from happening again.

It is something to clear up, prior to marriage. :D

Thank you Deer Hunter. Good job.

This reminds me of the projects I have to get to. I have a couple of my father'n laws guns in the gun room that need to be restored. They weren't actually my wife's shooters, but they've been neglected to the point that retoration is the only means. We're not worried about $ value, so some day I'll get to them. Floods are terrible. They put a family in a tail spin most every time. Priorities get changed and sometimes the things we love get put by the side.

Hey, do ya think you could take her and her dad out to shoot some clays? If he's physically able, I'm sure it will bring back some good memories.

-Steve
