I was at my bank today making a deposit and trying to wire some money into my brokerage account. All morning I was carrying IWB and it was starting to chafe; a first. Because I was on my way home I decided to put it into my jacket pocket (it's a deep pocket) for the rest of my errands. While I was waiting on the manager to tell me why he couldn't do the transfer, I put my hand in my pocket to reassure myself that it was safe and sound when the darn thing ripped through my jacket lining and started falling to the floor. Out goes my wallet and keys. Luckily I caught my gun half way down my leg and was able to sneak it into my pants pocket without drawing too much attention. Pretty sure someone saw my gun. :banghead: I left without incident but it did suck.

At least I didn't fire the gun as I've read others' banking experiences in recent threads.

What do you carry?
My current carry gun is a compact (not subcompact) Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro. I used to carry on my right kidney IWB but recently I decided to try it on the right hip. I've noticed much better retention, and it feels like its concealed better, but it is a little less comfortable. Its also to big to slip into a pocket unless I'm wearing pants with a cargo pocket.

You're also lucky you didn't hit the trigger. Some things are better off by letting them fall. Would you grab at a sharp knife that falls off your kitchen counter?

Now, class, tell me again, do we carry guns in our pockets?

Right, no, we do not!!!

STOP CARRYING GUNS IN YOUR POCKETS. It is dangerous. Put your pistol in a quality holster. Put your holster on a quality belt.

Now I know this is the 1,236 time that I've said this, but I'm going to repeat until you all agree with me and stop doing this silly practice.:D

Lucky

Lucky, yes you are.
I would definately go with El's advice Quality Leather Highrise Holster on a quality 1.5" belt. I carry a 3" revolver in the perfect set up because I often forget I am wearing it. If yours is promoting chafing it is the wrong one for you. You may have to pay to get a quality piece and thats ok. It is better to be out a few $$ then to not have it when needed due to chafing.
>rant off

I guess you have never heard of the class of guns known as pocket pistols.

Even with all precautions an unintentional unholstering can occur. We can make it less likely with good equipment and good habits. But like with ND's they can still happen even to the most experienced. So what do you do when you have a UU (unintentional unholstering) or NU (negligent unholstering)? (I guess a NU would come from pocket or mexican carry).

It of course depends on where it happened and who observed it. Being unruffled should help. Reholstering smoothly with safe gunhandeling might reassure an observer that you are not about to commit armed robery.

But vis-a-vis had a UU (NU?) in the bank.

Folks, lighten up on the guy. He said that he's not had a problem before today. Heaven forbid any of the rest of us should be out some time when a holster falls apart or our favorite belt finally gives. I've read more than a few of those threads. Everything craps-out at some point, he improvised, adapted well, and overcame the situation.

Vis- Frankly, unless someone else called you on it, I wouldn't worry about whether or not someone else noticed.

I was with my dad at wally world once and he had a keltec p11 IWB the toggle on the holster clip came undone, his pistol slid down his pants leg when it hit his shoe it ejected the magazine, the magazine then ejected rounds in various directions. all the while a middle aged woman staring in horror as well as many many others. the look on my dads face was the equiviolent of the one on my grandmas face when she told her "whit dress story".
my dad grabbed everything but the sjected rounds and we skeeeedaddled. now he only wears leather that he has made himself, as do i.

Hey guys this person was nice enough to point out a mishap for our benifit and flaming the poor guy does not help. There is nothing wrong with pocket carry especially with something like a j frame. I only suggest in this situation you should have just left it in the car or put in your pants pocket to start with. Unless it was too big for that then just leave it in the car all together

Nothing wrong with pocket carry. Just carry a gun and holster designed for it.
For me it's the S&W 642 in a Mika. No problem. But then, I don't know what can be done about pocket lining giving away.

Man that's a cheap pocket. BTW, I'm not flaming you.

Pretty easy to have the lady of the house double stitch the bottom seam of your pockets that you intend to carry in. Some better brands of clothing are already double-seamed. That is, if the material is even thick enough to withstand a durable seam being added.

We're quickly finding the ways that clothing manufacturers cut costs!

What is your gun/holster combination? An IWB shouldn't chafe.

If you have this problem often, you might consider a t-shirt under everything.

The only guns that I carry, sometimes, in my pocket are the KT P32 and P3AT. I use a pocket holster in my front pocket when I carry in pocket.
I have always considered anything larger or heavier too cumbersome for pocket carry.

Best,
Jerry

Are you serious?

I've carried (and still carry) a Smith 642 in my pocket. When I owned a Smith 340PD, I carried it in my pocket. I've carried a Keltec P3AT in my pocket.... and a Kahr PM9 in my pocket. I've even carried a Glock 27 in a pocket.

WIth a proper pocket holster and a big enough pocket, there is no reason not to.

I prefer OWB carry like most, and typically carry either a Glock 23 or 27 OWB, but in some cases it's not practical, and in those cases pocket carry is fine (so long as you have a pocket holster). You could probably even get away with pocket carry of a Smith J-frame without a pocket holster, but I haven't tried it.

ETA: Actually, I take that back. I think I carried my Smith 340PD without a pocket holster a time or two before I got the holster... and I believe I even carried the Glock 27 once in a pocket without a holster, but it was cargo-style pants and I wasn't going to sit down. I don't recommend either... but if I did it, I obviously got away with it.

It was holstered; I'm not an idiot. I assumed folks would probably realize if I took off the gun because it was chafing, I'd probably remove the holster from my waisteband as well.

I carried a G19

Noooo. Stop putting crap in the same pocket as your gun.
Nothing goes in that pocket but the gun, and keep your hands out; no need to fondle the thing, it's really still there......
