Just wanted to show off my hog rifle. I've had the rifle, a Norinco SKS, since the early 90s. I gave 75 bucks for the gun, gave just as much for the Choate camo stock which I like, increases length of pull. The Norincos seemed to be set up for a 9 year old boy. I got the case deflector that bolts to the ventilated hand guard not long after I bought the rifle and put the scope mount on it, a drill and tap affair that is solid.

I'd taken off the scope mount when it got loose and I rounded off the allen screws that held it on. Well, after deciding I needed another hog rifle, I got some new screws from a gunsmith and, this time, loctited 'em in place. I bought a new Bushnell lighted reticle Banner 3x9x40 and put a new green Laser spotlight on it. Man, this Laser is a HUGE improvement over the old school spotlight I'd used in the past I bought in 1976 and still had laying around. The Laser's spot is adjustable and you can collimate it to the field of view of the scope which, for my purposes, I set on 6 power. This allows it to be BRIGHT right out to 100 yards, max I'll be able to see in the trees.

I've already taken one pig with this rig an it worked beautifully. I'd thought about buying a new upper in .450 BM or .458 SOCOM for my AR, but I like this old SKS and it's quite effective on pigs with cheap Russian 154 grain soft point stuff. I haven't bothered to work up another handload. The bullet I was using is a .308, no longer offered by Sierra, and wasn't as accurate as the 154 loads and the 154s chronograph about 2200 fps which is HOT! It's right up there with .30-30 factory 150 grain stuff, but in a semi auto.

One thing, the SKS is an 8 lb gun and the light and scope add a little over a pound to that. But, I'm hunting from a blind, not moving around, and the weight of the gun is not important in this application. Were it, I'd put the light on my 6 lb+ .308, but I kinda like semi-auto for pig hunting. You can sometimes collect more'n one with a quick follow up.

Here's the old set up with the old school light that worked off a 6v lantern battery that had to be kept in a pocket.

Here's the new Laser set up, uses Lithium batteries in the light.

You may ask, why not night vision? Well, I'm retired and not rich, for one, and for two, James, a church brother and owner of El Campo Cycles, has had a couple of high end night vision optics and is constantly having to get them repaired. I'm no fan of electronics, especially on firearms, and the hogs don't seem to notice the green light. Think of it as a poor man's night vision. icon_mrgreen.gif

Tell you what, Simonov got it right. Aside from worn grenade launcher gas valves on the Yugo guns, I've never seen or even heard of an SKS jamming, breaking, or malfunctioning (with the fixed, factory mag). Great hog gun....and everything else gun for that matter.

Nice job, thanks for sharing!
