My last experience with a LEO

I got pulled over a few years ago by the MHP.
I recognized the the Officer as he got out of the car.
So I got out my LD & CCP and reached up pulled down the visor and opened the pocket to get my POI everything fell out in my lap. I hear someone laughing. I looked up and the Officer is standing by my door, so I rolled down the window.
And said,”Hi, John. Here is my LD & CCP and I'll hand you my POI in just a sec.”
John said, “Thank you. How is Mrs. Kathy doing?”
“Just fine. Here's my POI. How is your Mom and Dad?”
“Doing fine for their age. Mr. Cole are you carrying?”
“Sure.”
“My I have it, please?”
“Sure, but why?”
“SOP.”
“OK.” So with my left hand I reached over to my right hip and out my 637 and unloaded it and handed it him.
“Are there anymore in the truck?”
“Of course, it's huntin' season. Do you want them too?”
“No. Mr. Cole. Do you know how fast you were going?”
“Honestly, John, I don't know. My speedometer has been going out on me for a week and it has gotten where it does move till I get to about 70 and I'm not sure that is right.”
“Mr. Cole, I'm not going to give you a ticket, but you need to get that speedometer fixed and slow it down.”
“Thank you John and I will get it fixed.”
“You have a good evening and tell Mrs. Kathy I said Hi.”
“Do it. You have a safe evening and tell your Mom and Dad I said Hi.”

God, there are great advantages to living in small county, knowing and being known by just about everyone and a having a good rep.

We're trying to bail out finally on Hell-A this year and move to BFE, Dixie. After a half century in what was once the greatest state to grow up and live in-----I'm done. Just can't do it another year. This place is so rapidly approaching 3rd World status that it just makes my head spin. Pretty soon it'll just be the HollyWeird elite......and the bottom feeders. No one left in the middle, but that's life.

RIP, Kali, you were fun while you lasted.....

A rep so good he had to disarm you because of "SOP?" That's ... nice.

I'd rather he didn't do that, personally.

My last traffic stop in which my gun came up (it was obvious I was carrying as I was coming home from practice), the officer didn't know me, we'd never met. He asked, I stated the obvious, "yes."

He replied "That's fine. What'cha got? Something cool?"

And then we proceeded to talk gun shops and shooting ranges for about 10 minutes. Then he let me know my headlamp was out and we parted company. Not only did he not disarm me, he didn't even ask to see my license to carry.

I'd say there are great advantages to living where that's the norm, rather than disarming a person -- known personally by the officer as a good citizen -- simply because they drove a little too fast.

As soon as I pull someone over I check the plate and if it comes up clean I ask for a check on the owner of the vehical. If he comes back with a clean name and a cwp I usually just approach as I would someone who doesn't have a cwp. I dont normally ask to see their license or handgun unless they are suspicious. Im a marshal by the way.

Why are you running traffic if you're a marshal? The marshals I work with don't do that unless it's related to the specific case they're working. Just curious.

My state conceders your vehicle to be an extension of your home, therefore anything that you can legally possess in your home is legal in your vehicle. Pistol, shotgun, AR it doesn't matter. That is why I never bothered to get a carry permit because if I get pulled over in a state that does not recognize my constitutional rights I don't want it coming up that I carry a pistol if they run my tag.

BTW the safest place to stash a handgun is on a female passenger. No male officer is going to pat her down for fear of a sexual harassment law suit and they will not call in a female officer to do a search of a passenger over a simple traffic violation.

The best way to carry concealed is without a permit. If they know you have a gun it is not concealed.

Fair question for my LEO friends here

For those of you who check a vehicle license plate to see if the owner has a concealed weapon permit, how do you know it's the owner of the vehicle driving?

Lots of cars are owned by companies.
Lots of cars are family cars, with several drivers in the family.
Lots of cars are borrowed.

It just doesn't seem like a very reliable way of knowing whether the driver is armed.

If the license plate does not indicate a CCW holder, how do you know the driver is NOT carrying?

I only run the vehicals owner because there is a good chance of them driving. Once I get to there window I get there info and go back and run there name again if its not there vehical I ask them who's vehical it is and usually let them go after they sign a peice of paper, if this is a speeding pull over.

I've been pulled over like 3-4 times when I was carrying, I said, "Just so you know, I have a CCW and my pistol's in the glovebox/on me."

All of the cops said, "Ok", none asked to see it or asked what it was. I got 2 tickets and 2 warnings I think.

Me: Sees lights behind me ...pulls over ... turns on emergency blinkers ... opens window ... pulls out Wallet and Auto papers.
Officer: Gets out ... looks at tag ... walks to window ... looks at seat belt (properly fastened) ... says "You threw a cigarette butt out the window"
Me: "Yes sir" ... "I was not thinking" ... "I normally don't do that"
Officer: "You do have an ashtray" ... points in direction of ashtray ... smiles.
Me: "Yes" ... "It's full but I will empty it and use it".
Officer: "Ok" ... "Have a nice day sir" ... smiles ... walks back to his car.
Me: Rolls up window ... puts truck in gear ... turns off blinkers ... signals to enter traffic ... Drives away.
Officer: Does same.

Now for the interesting part.
I don't reload but I have friends who do so I save my brass...plus it is just tidy and polite to clean up after yourself.
I throw my brass in the bed of my pickup after shooting at the outdoor range (paid for by County Tax Revenue).
When I was stopped I had 300 empty .38 Special cases in the bed of my truck...not uncommon.
The Officer didn't say a word about them or seem the least bit bothered.
I LOVE New Mexico.
It is just assumed that we are ALL armed.

Was getting late and I was starving so I headed back into town for something to eat. I was going a tad bit fast..... and..... the only time in several years there was a Highway patrol officer..... golly gee whiz he was quick with the radar!! Captured me going 71 mph in a 55. Did the window down and hands on the steering wheel thingy as he approached the car. Drivers License and insurance requested and he said he had me going on radar at 71....good to know his radar was accurate!!

He looked at the License and CHL permit and asked me if I had a weapon in the car. I told him " No Sir I have 5 weapons" while I smiled. We talked about what I had in the car and he was interested in the AK so I got out and opened the trunk and let him inspect. He did ask if I were a gun nut! hahahaha He then asked how much do I go to the range and shoot?

"Some people are a nut for owning one gun so I guess it depends on your reference point; and yes today I kinda look like a gun nut" was my reply! ( I had picked up three new guns at the range.) Range time for me is usually for tuning a new gun so I do not go to the range as much as I should.

I returned to the car and was issued a warning ticket for to fast in a 55 mph zone. Whew!!

He even asked me if the Boarder patrol Check point ever hassle me when returning to town; implied by his stance and attitude he would talk to them for me if they did!

I just laughed and told him many of those guys shoot with me at the range and are always cool with whatever rifle ( in a rifle case or not ) I have laying in the back seat . I do keep all pistols concealed.

He was doing his job and by the posted law for that stretch of road I was flat out "in the wrong". Even if he would have issued a ticket to me I would still have appreciated his professionalism.

I got pulled over by a sherrif deput one night for speeding with an expired registration, inspection and one tail light out.
The first thing i said is "i don't think i'm required to tell you this but i have a CHL and am carrying". He responded that he greatly appreciated that and does not like to learn that by running a license.
He then went on to ask what i carry. I told him and HKP2000 which he called one of those fancy guns and looked at me like i was bourgeois. I asked what was on his hip and he said glock 22 and began to tell me how great it was. I agreed and said i had a 21 for HD.
We chatted a while longer and then he let me off on everything with just a warning which was a pleasant surprise. We were both in the same age group, late 20s to early 30s.

My most recent stop by an LEO was last week....first time in over 20 years. He clocked me going 61mph at the TOP of the ramp coming off of a 70mph freeway....at 5:30am with no traffic at all on that road besides me.
This was a 'Township department' which only does speed-trap work (in areas covered by 'real' city police). He was a young guy, apparently working on a name for himself or something.....or perhaps this is his first LEO gig after his mall security career?
anyway....
So it's 5:30am, pitch black out, I've got my window down and hands on the wheel. He comes up to my window and starts his speech. I tried to get a word in edgewise....After three attempts, I finally had to be a tad rude and just interrupt him in order to do the state mandated 'inform of CHL'. I informed him that I had a CHL and was armed. He gave me this weird deer-in-headlights look and clearly had no idea how to proceed....he was plainly just a newbie ticket writer....with visions of sugar-plum speeding tickets dancing in his head.
I explained that my pistol was in the center console by my right elbow and asked how he would like to proceed. Again, all I got was another blank look.
At that point he just thanked me for telling him, then proceeded back to his cruiser, where it took him 15 minutes to write out a simple speeding ticket...15 minutes.
Note: The plate check didn't tell him I have a CHL, as that vehicle is registered in my wife's name.

.

Is it common for states to list whether you have a CHL or not on your info that they bring up during a traffic stop?

Texas does not associate a Concealed Carry License with a vehicle or Driver's license.

When I went down to the Tennessee Precision Multi-gun Rifle Match in May, I got stopped at sobriety checkpoint on the way back to my hotel from the property owner's home. I'd gone out to visit with him after the match to drink lemonade on his porch and just enjoy the fine evening. First time I've ever been stopped at a sobriety checkpoint, and it had to happen 650 miles and 4 states away from home.

The Trooper noticed I was from out of town, asked if I was visiting family in the area. I told him I was in town for a rifle match being held a few miles down the road, and was just on my way back to the hotel. Had a 1911 on me, a .308 rifle and 400 rounds in the back. Never asked if I had a weapon in the vehicle, or to see anything, not even an ID. Wished me a pleasant good evening, I did the same in return, and left.

"Texas does not associate a Concealed Carry License with a vehicle or Driver's license."

I believe that to be false. It's my understanding that a driver license will be run through the Tx Law Enforcement Telecomm System which will reveal that a person holds a CHL. My CHL instructor, in addition to others, have informed me of this. LE that have pulled me over have confirmed this as well in conversation. To my knowledge running plates will not reveal holding of a CHL though.
