My Last Handgun, what I chose when Canada shut down civilian handgun ownership.

I hadn’t made a video in eight or nine years, decided I should probably do one for this occasion as it’s the last time I’ll open a box from the mail containing a handgun in my country.

Hope you enjoy, and thought some might be curious what I chose as the last one and why.

I’ll take some photos soon as I give her a good cleaning, the previous owner clearly enjoyed shooting her more than cleaning her, and fair enough with a .22.

And in the states you definitely enjoy firearm freedoms we don’t, but I want to take the chance to nip in the bud the politics talk as I broach that. These types of threads can rapidly take a tack well into the political which is never enjoyable even if all the points were right. I try not to fret that which I have little immediate control over, and overall Canada is a wide open wilderness of hunting and opportunity… with imperfections.

Grateful to have this Smith, it took on an unexpected importance.

Ha! Up here it’s always a canoe stability issue.

With the Canadian handgun market now being totally frozen, I wonder how hard it will be to find common pistol ammo in the near future? Not an issue for a 22lr at least... but for centerfire rounds like 9mm.

Great choice! Have the pistol prices gone up or down as the ban approaches? I would assume up, but you never know, dealers may need to get rid of their inventory.

What are you able to do with existing pistols if you no longer want them?

That's a sad video. Right up there with Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller.
I couldn't imagine buying my last one

They went up, but not extraordinarily, Covid could have been equally to blame. I paid the equivalent of $900US before ship, it would probably have been $750 in 2020.

You can still export, in fact I just exported a Colt Bisley .44 Russian to the states for auction right before Christmas, that Colt and the Glock were my only two handguns. Then I was down just the soulless Glock, so I’m really glad this one showed up.

Anyone have the book to get an idea of manufacture date? Serial is AEY20XX

Makes it an 80s 17-4 I believe, just curious which 80s.

Ardent, good choice for a final handgun purchase. I hope you folks get that law, ruling, edict turned around one day soon.

I have an S&W 17-3 with a 6” barrel. I paid $600 for it in 2016. I paid too much according to those people that live in Magic Land where classic Smiths and Colts are found in vast numbers for 3 or 4 $100 bills. I have not yet encountered that magical place but I still search for it. :p
Anyway, when I was in High School my Dad bought a pre-1957 S&W K22 Masterpiece with an 8 3/8” barrel. I dearly loved that gun and shot it as often as I could. After he passed my Mom called me to see which of my Dad’s guns I wanted. I should have been more clear on my response but I said “The only gun that I want is his .22 revolver.” She shipped me his High Standard Sentinel Mk IV .22 Magnum. The S&W she gave to one of my Dad’s friends. I was bummed.
I have yet to find a 8 3/8” K22 that I can afford - these things always appear when money is tight, but I am very happy with my 17-3. It is such an accurate revolver and it would definitely be one to survive a boating, canoe or kayak mishap. :D

Congratulations on your Smith & Wesson.

Here is a photo of mine.

I'm curious.
Can you holster that up and carry it out and about or is it strictly limited to range use?
I'm not sure how the handgun laws work in Canada.

I guess we can't always know when we score. I bought mine brand new in '75. Don't know what I paid and didn't have the wisdom to save the box and papers... and that silly screwdriver. I'd include a pic but you all know what it looks like. 8 3/8 inch. I've got rid of many guns over the years but not this one. Never this one.

Range only for a .22 like this, you can carry for work in Canada with an ATC (Authorization to Carry) which is how I carried the Glock. ATC is common in bush professions like mine.

Perhaps a thread on your .318?

Good eye ;) I’m into the oddballs, though I’m trying to kick the habit. .318, .577, .375 Flanged. The .318 sits as a project still, I do a fair bit of gunsmithing in the the winter here, and have a .318 Lothar Walther blank and an Oberndorf Sporter sitting together. Even found the reamer, headspace gauge, and dies. I just need the time to do it, it may be sold as a project before I get there. Following the .318 is a .375 Kemano Oberndorf. F87zODe.jpg
