This object was inspired by reading Kuhnhausen's book on Mausers.
That book drives me crazy, as my scatter brained mind can not straighten out the organization of his lecture notes.
I start with the receiver bolt bore as the reference and true the face of the large ring to that. That is what the mandrel is for, so I can hold the receiver in the lathe.
I take the receiver off the lathe and work on it by hand:
Next I true the inner stop ring of the shoulder to the face.
When I put the barrel blank into the lathe, I dial in both ends of the barrel, looking at the grooves of the bore with a dial indicator.
When I cut the shoulders of the barrel, I make them the same distance as the distance from the inner stop ring to the large ring face.
I cut the 55 degree threads until the receiver will just screw on the barrel in the lathe.
After I cut the chamber and lap the lugs, but before I set the headspace, I take the barrel out of the lathe, coat the threads with moly grease, and torque the barrel with my home make barrel vice and my home made action wrench to over 300 foot pounds. Then I take out the last few thousands so the bolt just closes on a case that I resized in my sizer die.
