I recently picked up a Mosin 91/30 in a trade deal. I decided to sporterize it into a decent truck/hunting rifle. I cut 7" off the long 29" barrel for an overall 22" barrel. I recrowned the barrel and lapped the muzzle. This effectively removed the front sight. I removed the rear sight, put the pins back in and ground off the rear sight hump to the exact contour of the barre. I then media blasted thte barrel to remove all bluing. I applied my first ever application of John Norrel's Moly Resin. Came out excellent. I also Mollied the magazine, mag spring and trigger.

I decided to camo it so I covered it with duracoat. Dark earth base with tan and sniper green highlights. I ordred and mounted a Rock Silid Industries scope mount and extended down turned bolt handle. Overall the rifle is already much lighter and well balanced by removing 7" of heavy barrel.

How it will shoot who knows but I'm hopeful. I bought dies and some brass cased boxer primed reloadable ammo so I can load hunting rounds for it.

I have a Mueller 4x16x50 APT scope which has not arrived yet.

You do anything about the trigger assembly as far as lighter and smoother pull, can't wait to hear how it handles

I did the poor mans trigger job with the washer spacing the tension spring and the spring to ease the slop. Did wonders! Won't drop the cash on a Timney till I know how it shoots.

I see that your cat is just as bad as mine for picking food out of the bowl and then eating it from the floor, or in your case the counter... :D

I'm not a fan of all camo'ed guns but I can see that you've done a very nice job of it. Your skills at doing a quality job are certainly up there.

I'm also thinking that with the extreme height needed for a Mosin scope mount to allow the empties to clear that most stocks simply do not have a high enough comb to allow for a good cheek weld when the shooter's eyes are aligned with the scope. How does this one fit you? Would an extended comb or maybe an adjustable cheek rest added to the stock make for a better fit?

Anyhow it's an interesting project gun. I'm looking forward to reading about how it shoots with good reloads compared to the milsurp ammo I've shot from my own Mosins.

It fits pretty good actually. Once I get to fire it this weekend I'll know more. A strap on cheek pad may be the ticket if I need to get higher. I do have a BIG face though so I may be good.

Thanks for the props. I've been home refinishing for a few years now and really enjoy it. Messed up alot of guns to get it figured out. LOL

BTW my messy cat is a 30lb orange Maine Coon named Remington. He likes my vibratory tumbler, playing with brass and of course making a mess.:)

I wanted to hate this... I wanted to say "No! You cannot take a piece of history and do this". You have destroyed my cynicism with what I must say is the most beautiful sporterizing job I have ever seen. I hope it shoots as good as it looks.

VERY nice job so far. Yeah, how did you do the bolt like that? If it shoots nice a Timminy trigger with the safety feature would really finish things out good. I hate the Mosin safety as it is. Be sure to slug he bore as they can run anywhere from .308 to .313. With the proper slug it shoot shoot great.

That is a Rock Solid Industries bolt. You can send your bolt to them to weld or buy one with the sleeve which I did. Beautiful work they do. I slugged the barrel tonight and it's .311. I will be trying both .308 and .311 because you never know! First I have to shoot these 100 PPU 180 match I had to buy just to get the brass. I have Hornady 150SP and 150SST and 174FMJ in .311 to try. I have every kind of .308. It would be so cool if I could get a 200 Accubond to stabilize and be accurate. Nothing would be safe!:D
