Yesterday, my buddy and I decided it was time to go buy some ammo for our Goose hunt next weekend and my buddy was also going to pick up a new shotgun so as to properly reach out and touch the birds. The week previous he had talked to a salesman there and worked him down to a price of 269.00 on a brand new in the box Remington 870 express super mag (synthetic). Why he didn't jump on it that day, I don't know. I think it was fate's way of smiling down on me. To make a long story short, my buddy was able to secure that price for the last synthetic they had in stock, and me being the leech that I am, I picked up the last wood stocked 870 express super mag. they had in stock for the same price (how could I pass that up?). I just went there to buy shells.....

I was going to use my dad's old 870, but now it is going to be used by another buddy of mine. He wanted to go, but doesn't have a shotgun and couldn't afford to buy one, but now he's going whether he likes it or not. It's my way of passing on the good gun karma. If I can successfully bring this guy into the hunting world, then it will all be worth every penny I just spent. :)

If you are going to be shooting 3-1/2 inchers, I hope you do not have any loose fillings. It will reach out and touch geese all right (with the right loads), but just remember it doesn't have to reach at all to smack you !

I know all I want to know about the 870. What I need to know is whether you have a reciepe that will make a goose edible.

My grandpa always said that if you shoot it, you're honor bound to eat it. I've tried to abide by that dictum, but even my Lab turned his nose up at the last goose I cooked.

That' a nice shotgun, enjoy. My self I don't shoot 3 1/2 inch 12. I shot a couple out of a buddy's browning and it hurt. If I need that kind of a payload I'll just use a 10 gauge.

I duck and goose hunt quite a bit every year and mostly use 2 3/4 inch heavy shot and a little 3 inch and it seems to get it done pretty good.

Man, the internet is loaded with great goose recipes. Goose is way easier than duck even. The DU cookbook has several great recipes.
Was this a Canada Goose? Brant and Snow geese are a bit trickier. Do not shoot Cormorants !
I can be sympathetic. I once made some spaghetti sauce, starting with a jar sauce no less, that was so bad my Lab would not touch it either. I have no idea what I did wrong. I used a whole can of the Italian breadcrumbs in the ground beef making the meatballs, and they turned out okay anyway. :). We has spaghetti and meatballs - just no sauce. A little of that garlic butter sauce that comes with the pizza to dip your crust in was okay with it too.
