I fell in love with the 458 SOCOM a couple years ago and picked up a 16" RRA carbine. Shot the heck out of it and decided I wanted a pistol length system. Well not too long ago TROMIX, the original maker of the SOCOM began to get barrels and make parts again. I was one who bugged him about getting shorter barrels. He came out with 12 and 10.5". Well since I made such a fuss I guess I needed to buy a barrel and start putting one together.

Well Received the last parts this afternoon. I have a fully functioning 10.5" 458 SOCOM pistol.

Stats; Tromix 10.5" pistol length gas barrel, lowpro gasblock, Muzzle brake and Bolt. RRA upper with Misc parts, NIB bolt carrier and charging handle. MI Gen2 ss handguard, Spikes lower with CMMG LPK. Ace pistol buffer tube and buffer.

Fired one round just to check function. Went BANG and ejected case so it is working fine so far. Won't be able to do any major testing till Fri. Too much W##$. That awful four letter word.

Recoil was not nearly as bad as I predicted once again.. Don't know if the brake has that much to do with it but it is much lighter recoil than the 16" carbine. It is much lighter weight as well. Can't wait to hit the range for a few hours.

Then I need to schedule a trip to Tx for a hunt with The Red Goat.

Awesome. Don't see many pistols in .458 SOCOM. What is the velocity difference between that and a 16" barrel?

Does it make a ka-ching ($) sound every time you pull the trigger?

Very nice setup though.

We do have some. But finding out where they are is very hard. Land owners won't let it be known as state dfg will get involved. I come down to your parts to hunt pig.

We sure enough have plenty to share! Awesome looking pistol, I went with the Beowulf for my thumper AR, does really nasty things to pigs.

Running 300, 325, 405, 525gn. Have not chrono'd any yet. Only fired one round. Should be getting 1300 to 1900 depending on weight. Of course I can run subsonic also. Short range round but like a freight train. Out to 150yds is within range with the 458socom, like a modern 45/70. It can go out further but really don't want to put on a tang site.

Heck the flash will either blind em or fry em...;) This little pistol (figuratively speaking) is just too cool.

10.5" 458 socom vs 16" 458 socom

I have been using this round for quite a few years on both a 16" and 10.5" AR.

I've chronographed some factory rounds, but 99% of what I shoot are reloads. I do use some of the bullet weights that bldsmith mentioned for target and hunting, here is my data, hope this helps.

Rem 405gr SJSP in my 16" = 1633, 1666, 1664, 1634, 1658.
Rem 405gr SJSP in my 10.5" = 1531, 1520, 1529, 1510.

Rem 300gr SJHP in my 16" = 1919, 1955, 1971.
Rem 300gr SJHP in my 10.5" = 1784, 1766, 1777, 1765, 1778, 1779, 1777.

Hdy 325FTX in my 16" = 1851, 1846,1866 ,1872, 1848, 1841.
Hdy 325FTX in my 10.5" = 1793, 1808, 1806, 1805, 1774, 1780, 1796.

As for the flash, these loads aren't bad at all, you don't even notice a flash even on an indoor range.

I have however loaded some 100gr aluminum slugs and shot them out of my 16" AR which are extremely bright. Unfortunately I can't find my data sheet for this load, but I think it was in the neighborhood of 2500fps. I've never chronographed it out of my 10.5", but here are some pics.

Thanks big 44. Been wondering about final.performance myself. Been too busy at work to get out. Soon, very soon.

Sounds like 15%, 17%, and 7% loss of energy. The last one does not sound right. It is definitely a good candidate for a pistol or SBR.

Mike

Yes, it is a Sig arm brace. Approved by ATF for use on AR pistols:cool:. Will be applying for an SBR soon.
