So apparently I am getting a tax return, which supprised me. I only work summer and winter break when I am home from school. Anyway, I have $400 to spend guilt-free, so to speak.

The thing is, I sort of have all the basics.

EDIT These are the guns I already have!!!

Marlin 981t - .22lr,l,s bolt action rifle (3 in one, gotta love it, gotta have it)
Norinco SKS - Centerfire rifle, SHTF, 100 yard plinking, cheap ammo
Mosin M38 - Cheap ammo, long range fun, cool to have
K31 - Cool to have, serious long range when I want to see what I can do
Rem870 Police- Home Defense, plus ya gotta have a shotgun

The obvious missing item is a handgun of any sort. I plan on getting handguns and my CHL at 21, but now I am 19.

Should I see if I can get my dad or brother to help me out? I know I can recieve one as a gift, but is it still a gift if I give them money and they buy it for me? Or is that a straw purchase?

If that is too much hassel, what kind of long gun should I get?

It's a straw purchase if you give money to someone to buy a gun for you. However, AFAIK (and check your State laws about this), while you can't buy a handgun at a gun shop until you're 21, there are some States where you can buy one privately before that age. As I said, check your State's laws about this. Also, of course, you can accept one as a gift from someone (but only if your money isn't involved).

Most ppl would view that as a straw purchase as you cannot legally own the handgun at this time. I would recommend just being patient. Your time will come. It's only 2 years...

But the SKS. GO get some cheap wolf ammo, and go have some fun. Hand guns can wait and no sense getting your brother in trouble if it's illegal.

What state do you live in?

In Michigan you can buy a pistol in a private purchase. As Preacherman said you can recive a pistol as a gift.

My vote is the M38.

SKS, Mosin. These are fine rifles that you can buy for less than $200 each. Ammo is cheap. K31 is good too but the ammo is a little bigger. Sounds like you're on a budget so the SKS and Mosin would be my choices.

Here in Florida you have to be 21 to buy a handgun from a dealer but only have to be 18 to do a face-to-face transfer. Check you local gun shops and shooting ranges and see what kind of consignment guns you can find. You might be able to get the seller to do you a face-to-face transfer rather than going through the dealer.

If you decide on another rifle you could look at an AK for about $350 or start working towards a AR (build a lower receiver from parts. It's real easy). Also, Savage arms has a new Stevens model (M200) offered in all the normal rifle calibers including .223 and .308 (which can be bought in mil-surp bulk). These rifles are getting great reviews and only have an MSRP of $330.

Well between the .22, the 12 gauge, and the other rifles, you have pretty much everything but the handgun covered. One could argue for a small bore precision rifle but those are hard to come by in your price range.

My suggestion since you already have the Simonov and Mosin, and obviously appreciate the rugged functionality and reliability of Russian weapontry, is to get yourself an AK. If you want to stick to Russian manufactured weapons, I think you can get a Saiga and have it converted for under $400. If not, there is always the Romanian AK clones, which may not have the best fit and finish, but in my experience will take pretty much anything you feed them and ask for more. The WASRs may not be much to look at, but they work. And as you get more money in the future, if you so choose, you can upgrade them to your heart's content, as money permits. I am spending my income tax return on a PK-AS-V (Russian red dot) for my WASR. It is has been a long time coming but it is slowly becoming my masterpiece. After the red dot is on there, all that is left is the muzzle. Once that is threaded and a flash surpressor is installed, it will be my way of saying "thank you" to all the politicians on Capital Hill working so hard on my behalf to keep me safe by denying me these simple pleasures...like bump firing and 30 round magazines dumped blissfully downrange for no other reason than the noise it makes, smoking handguards, and the crunch of spent cases and gravel being stepped on by shirtless hooligans in camo BDU pants and size 14 work boots...

Here's a different idea, even though it's probably not what you want to hear. (If you're like a typical American, like me, that money's gonna burn a hole in your pocket if you don't spend it NOW!)

Still, I'm gonna throw it out there anyway, just to be different.

Buy a 2 year CD with it at the best interest rate you can. Call the CD "handgun".

Let it mature, collect the interest, and buy an even better handgun than you can now.

Use the intervening two years to practice with your other (fine) long guns in the mean time, becoming amazingly proficient with them.

Then, in two years, you've got more time to work on the handgun, when it's legal.
