Tra-la, tra-lee.......

Mah gun is WORKIN now. Thanks to Jim Keenan for suggestions and most of all.....encouragement .....to keep at it.

Finally today, I was unpissed enough to calmly take the thing apart and see how it WORKS......or is SUPPOSED to work.

An it worked. Tweaked an staked an cleaned an fed it an jammed it an screwed it an jabbed it an ......all dat.

An figgerin out what it was SPOSED to do, got it to where I cud see what it was NOT doin.

Goofy. An old clunk.......but MY FIRST GUN......

And although I'll shoot my better stuff, I feel better KNOWING mah ole pal is workin again.

:) :D :D

Congratulations.

I have just recently started shooting my very first rifle again.
A late 40s vintage Marlin 81DL he bought new.
I guess I hadn't fired it in at least 10 years.

It still shoots great but I am going to have to do a little adjusting to get it to feed .22 shorts 100%. It's about 99% with them now.

The funny thing is, the main reason my Dad gave it to me when I was 13 was because it wouldn't feed shorts at all. (All I had to do was put the other leg of the spring back on the follower to fix that.)

Very good! I sort of thought Jim would have the necessary "know how" to get it fixed. It's nice to have that kind of talent around ... :D

Hi, guys,

Thanks for the kind words. I often see comments here and elsewhere to "tighten down those screws", and the like. But the Remington 500 series guns don't take kindly to doing that. Screws have to be put in just right and staked in place. Tightening them down can pinch the frame and keep the gun from working. They are rugged and reliable rifles, but do need some know-how, which apparently Top Gun's gunsmith didn't have. The only drawback for me was that I have a 511 (box mag repeater) and the Top Gun's 512 is a tubular magazine rifle. But some of the principles are the same, so I was glad to be able to help Top Gun out.

Jim
