Today, I tried a "rifle workout" at the gun club.

I had an AR-15 and an M1A.

I started on the 25 yard line, and confirmed a rough zero.

After that, I went to the 100 yard line and reconfirmed my zero off the bench.

Then, the "workout" started.

The wind was blowing left to right at 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20.

At 200 yards, the wind was a half value (45 degrees off straight ahead) and at 300, it was a full value (90 degrees off straight ahead).

My "workout" was to guesstimate the correct amount of clicks needed to get from 100 to 200 and then to 300 yards, and the correct amount of clicks for windage.

I did not confirm anything at 200 or 300 yards. It was guesstimate, make adjustments, and open fire.

I shot only from field prone, on the ground, with a sling.

I shot "rapid fire" only, or five shot strings in about five seconds, with the time starting once I was completely in the prone position.

I would start five to seven yards behind the firing line, with a round chambered, the safety on, and my finger off the trigger.

I then sprinted to the line while slinging up, flopped down into prone, flicked the safety off, and opened fire.

Here are some pics of my workout at 300 yards.

The target is from Law Enforcement Targets Inc, and while I don't know the actual target number, I call it the "Billybob Meth-head" target. It is life sized, and as you can see, fairly realistic.

My holes are marked by blue numbers. Any hole with a red circle is a hole made when I pulled the target off the staples.

The string of "1's" was my first string with the M1A. After that string, I held in a different spot on the target and produced the nice group of "2's" on the lower left.

The "3's" were me trying for a 300 yard head shot. I've got a nice group up high, with one low flier.

The "4's" were with the AR-15, and consist of a group of eight shots.

I had 24 rounds of .223 left, and three targets downrange, so I shot at each target 8 times, rapid fire.

Again, to keep this exercise as realistic as possible, I confirmed only my 100 yard zero.

After that, I guesstimated the number clicks for elevation, and for wind correction.

I shot only from field prone, in actual grass, with no shooting mat. I wore jeans and a polo shirt, and just ran up to the line, flopped down into prone, and shot rapid fire only. No optics, just iron sights.

It was a lot of fun. I see myself doing this a lot more.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.

I burned up 80 rounds of .308 and 90 rounds of .223 in the total exericise.

I had one target at 200 yards, and three separate targets at 300 yards.

If I smoked, I'd need about a half-pack of cigarettes right now.
