Many of us enjoy vaporizing prairie dogs at extended distances with our favorite high power rifle, and high velocity load, thus the "cool mist in the morning" part. Most PD rigs are usually something in .17, 22 cal or .24 cal, but some of us like a bigger more robust cartridge. .277" and even .284 to obtain an even finer mist.

I'll never forget the first time I shot a coyote with a 90 gr. HP's from my Rem. 700 chambered in .270, that was like 30 years ago as I recall. The small light HP was going something like 3,700 fps, the yote was standing under the canopy of a large juniper, broad side and about 150 yds. up hill of me. I got a good rest and let one go. When my nephew and I hiked up the hill to investigate, all we found was blood, a good deal of blood, but no yote. After several minutes of quickly looking around and under the tree, my nephew says uncle mike, look, and he pointed up. When I looked up under the canopy of the juniper tree, I saw what was really unidentifiable as a coyote, it was literally smeared across the under side of the canopy.

I was so impressed with that, that I have never found hunting coyote much fun unless I can hunt them with a medium caliber high velocity HP. However, not everyone seems to agree with me. Some, including those that don't sell the pelts get irked with me when I vaporize a yote or other varmint, PD's aside of course, but I hunt those with 22-250 anyway. However, apparently jack rabbits have enough body mass and liquid to do the vaporize thing with the .270 or 7 mag and the right bullet.

I like to use a Sierra 90 gr. HP for the .270 win.. Just about any decent published slow burning powder gets them out there real good, but IMR-4350 does very well for me.

For the 7mm RM, I like the 110 gr. TNT, or the Sierra 100 gr. HP, and a worked up charge of RL22.

This is the effect I'm trying to get with my 25-06 rem for groundhogs. A 75gr vmax around 3900fps. Results will follow when then come out if hiding for the spring.

IME a 75 Grain Sierra HP from a .257 Weatherby Magnum will literally turn prairie dogs inside out.

Just my .02,
