Just thought I'd share a picture of my sexy new toy. It's a Remington 870 AOW. The barrel is only 12.5" inches long. It took three and a half months to get the tax stamp back from BATFE, which is about a month and a half less than my last NFA weapon.

Anyway, here she is:

BTW, she's fun to shoot, but your wrists will be sore after just a few rounds.

OEF_Vet, I'm curious. Is this a "toy", or would you use it for HD?

In your view, is it better than a regular shotgun?

Mine is an 18" police gun. Love it. Wouldn't give up my stock for anything. I just like the stability, and how it allows me to point more accurately than something held at waist level.

I'm not being critical of your gun. I haven't shot one like that (and don't intend to). But to each their own.

But I am curious about why you think it's a good idea.

Having said that, it IS an interesting looking gun. I won't buy one, but it does look interesting.

Ouch!.... I do enjoy a good shottie. I would be interested to know how the recoil would affect your wrist though? I wouldn't mind racking a few through it myself. Nice Toy!!!!!!:cool:
 
i've shot that same gun, and the recoil is definitely ... interesting.

i prefer a full stock, but a full-stocked shotgun can't fit into a briefcase.
 
Long ago I took some shots with one like that, belongs to a friend who works for the Gummint.

Hard to control, vicious kick, tremendous blast. Unless one has major storage and packing issues, better off with a standard stock and barrel.

BTW, a 14" barreled 870 with a standard stock is a different beast altogether.
 
Yeah, it's not the most gentle of shotguns. But, it was always intended as "just another addition to the collection / range toy."

I came across the shotgun last fall at a local gunshow, an 870 which came from the factory without a full stock. As many of you know, that is indeed a rarity. So, I couldn't resist. I mean, you can actually shorten an 870 quite a bit more than a Mossberg 500 Cruiser. So, I convinced my buddy, who is a Class 7 FFL / Type 2 SOT to register it on a Form 2 as an AOW and transfer it to me on a Form 4. Since I've done some sales work for him in the past, he didn't charge me any extra for it, other than for the labor of cutting the barrel.

So, I paid $275 for the shotgun, $75 for the barrel cutting, and $5 for the NFA transfer. I've got an 870 AOW for a grand total of $355. You can't touch a commercially available AOW or SBS for that price, with transfer fees included. How could I resist?

This is only one of five 870's that I own. I also own a Police Magnum, with an 18" bbl, Mesa Tactical low-rise stock adapter, M4 stock, and Surefire foreend, a 20 ga. Youth Model, and two 12 ga. Express Magnums, one with a 26" bbl, the other with a 28" bbl. The two Express Magnums are destined for the NFA registry as Short-Barrel Shotguns, though. One will be set-up with a 14" barrel and a Speedfeed III stock. The other will undergo a major transformation, with plenty of gunsmith work, and should end up with a 9" bbl and an appropriately shortened mag tube. It will also get a Mesa Tactical high rise AR stock adapter, M4 stock, a Surefire M69 rail system (cut to fit the short mag tube), a VFG, and an EOTech HWS.

Nice. So I can live vicariously through you: throw one of the Knoxx breaching pistol grips on it and that should tame recoil tremendously, possibly making it a more different and capable animal than you already think it is. (Thier breaching pistol grip is sans any kind of stock, but has one of thier recoil reducing spring setups within the grip.)

Replace the grip with a Pachmayr. That doesn't cost too much and really helps your wrist! The Pachmayr is of softer rubber and spreads the recoil more evenly along the wrist joints. Your grip will focus the recoil to the joint near the thumb.

I have the 'normal' Spec Ops on my 870, which adds the rear portion to the Breaching pistol grip along with the 2nd recoil reducer in that section. With the SpecOps, 3" slugs are not only manageable, but fun in a "my-shoulder-should-be-falling-off-but-it-feels-great" kind of way. Buckshot and 2.25 slugs are downright grinning fun to shoot-as long as you want to.

The Breacher won't be as good with only one reducer setup, but it should take a considerable amount of felt recoil out of the pistol-grip 12 gauge equation.

Would a Mesa Tactical CAR stock be legal? Then , with a set of ghost rings tritiums,and a Surefire forend, you'd have something useful outside of phone booths! I'd like to have something like that!:)
 
That actually turns the firearm into a short barrel shotgun which is NOT an AOW and requires the $200 tax stamp and wait.

Boy, do I ever have the bug. Hehehe. At least I haven't sold a kidney in order to finance a machinegun. At least not yet, anyways. :evil:

Here's a picture I borrowed from a poster at "that website named after Mr. Stoner's baby". This is what I intend to do with one of my other two 870 Express Magnums, except I'm going to use a Mesa Tactical high-tube adapter with an M4 stock, as opposed to a CavArms SST870 with MagPul93B. I'm also planning to paint mine OD Green, as opposed to tan.

Now I can certainly understand the fun aspect but all that comes to mind is a the statemet of a rather elderly individual after a friend burned several rounds off.
