My Sniper Rifle is DONE!

lobo9er,
I shot the rifle before, but with a Nikon Buckmaster BDC scope. I didn't like the scope so I sold it over 6 months ago, and finally got enough extra cash to buy the Horus Scope.

Anyways, I shot Federal Gold Medal Ammo. 168gr Sierra BTHP and then later 175gr. Both shot great, but given the better "longer" range performance of 175gr I decided to stick to that load.
With the crappy BDC scope, I managed to shoot 5 shot group of 0.417 inch at 100 yards. <borat>VERY NICE</borat>
SO the rifle is more than capable of 1/2 MOA or better. Now with the new glass, I'm hopping to be putting bullets through the same hole :)

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys! I'm an amateur gun smith and I enjoy putting my parts together. Even if I screw up :)

May be J-M01 should turn off his net service & put the $$ in a piggy bank. then he to could go buy a gun some day.

In all honestly that T3 will outshoot alot of the "snob" rifles right out of the box.

A guy asked me one time what the difference was between a 1 MOA rifle and a 1/2 MOA rifle. I said about 2500 bucks :).

Enjoy your rifle, and good luck with your TV show :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

LeonCarr,
Tikka was $700. They guarantee at least 1MOA out of the box. The rifle consistently shot better. I'm hoping for sub 1/2 MOA with the new scope (using factory loads, the best there are, but still factory loads).

1st time i heard the name, they have a nice line up of products.
I was very much aware of Horus, but didn't realize that they had line of scopes. Their reticles are top of the line. Do you have any other "mid to high-end" glass to compare it to? If so I am eager to hear how it compares to optics like a Leupy Mk. IV, Zeiss, Swaro, Super Sniper, et cetera. The Hawk looks like a very nice scope for the money, especially considering it is Mil/Mil FFP. :)

Maverick223,
I can't honestly say about the quality of the glass in Horus Vision besides the fact that to me it looks GOOD. This is the 2nd scope I've ever had (I'm on my 3rd now, Horus and cheapo rusian 4x for my Saiga 5.45, my first was Nikon Buckmaster 18x BDC) so I have no idea what a GOOD scope is. All I know is that I paid $800 for it and I like it :)
Now having significant background in math, computer science (I program super computers / clusters for a living) and having 15+ years experience in 3D computer graphics, I found the FFP concept extremely appealing. Plus the scope is SMOA/SMOA. The reticle has "clicks" that are 1 SMOA at 100yrds and the turrets are 1/4 SMOA per click... making it very intuitive to me, although being from Poland, I would much rather prefer centimeters and meters ;)

BTW, the scope itself is actually manufactured by HAKKO / Japan Optics Ltd., made in Japan. Supposedly Japanese glass is good. I wouldn't honestly know. It's one of those things... I didn't know anything about bolt action rifles also, but for some reason that I don't even remember, over 2 years ago I somehow fell in love with Tikka's, so I HAD TO HAVE a Tikka. Then I think my friend showed me Horus website ( www.horusvision.com ) and I HAD to HAVE a horus :)

I'm so easily persuaded :D

IIRC some of their other scopes had Mil/Mil which should be more to your liking, either way the reticle and adjustments are the same meaning there is no conversion necessary between what you see and what you need to do to make the correction. That is a big plus as far as I am concerned. I will have to do a bit more research, but I may have to invest in one of the Horus scopes...heck many other manufacturers charge $250.00 or so just to use one of their reticles...and they are FFP, which is great for using the reticle as it was designed. :)

"...5 peaces..." 5 what?
Scoping a bolt action rifle doesn't make it a sniper's rifle. Makes it a hunting rifle. You glass bed it too?

This one is for nick and his range buddies .

Remington makes a 700 pss (police sniper special ) . So if that is the gun you are wanting to buy then correct your range buddy and tell him " no this is a sniper rifle . :D

It is purpose, resolve, skill and patience that make a sniper not a piece of specialized equipment. If he can get everything he needs out of that Tika then it is his sniper rifle. It is much better than some of the rifles used by snipers in Vietnam and miles ahead of the one used in the great war and certainly better than the ones used in our revolutionary war.

Shoot it and enjoy it.

Wow!! Lots of anal expert terminologist here! You almost need to be an English Teacher, and proficiant at all terminology, to post a thread among other so called "Gun Enthusiast"! Give the guy a break, or go correct someone else, some place else! Let the guy enjoy his rifle, already:cool::neener:

Well-said, JD!

The man has a nice set-up, and he wants to share it. Then people bust his backside over terminology?! That's not right.

I think the sceptics should leave the man alone until he shoots it to see the results. I spent time on the range this summer with Marine scout snipers and 19th Group snipers, and they agree with me that their rifles don't do anything that you can't do with a stock Remington VS, a decent scope, and some good ammo. Let him get a few boxes of Gold Match, dial it in, and see what happens.

And while I am sure that guys with $500 shooting skills who buy $2000 rifles that they don't have the skills to justify keep dealers in business, we all have to start somewhere. I would rather get gear that I know can outshoot me than get inferior gear and wonder if it's me or the gun that can't shoot straight.

Well said...it is not worth the expense of cheap gear...you will end up wasting thousands of dollars of good ammo shooting a rifle that you saved $100.00 on. :)

or wasting thousands of dollars on ammo and rifle because you went cheap on the scope.
That's really what I mean...most half-way decent "hunting class" rifles will maintain at least 1MOA...the optics are where you will really see the difference...and surprisingly what most people will end up skimping on. :banghead:
