My son bought a Zastav M48

One key thing is that the M48 features a modified shorter 98 action, and the bolts do not interchange with other 98 platform weapons. This shorter action also causes difficulty with aftermarket components such as stocks.

Thanks. I watched a pretty good YouTube video ( should have started there)

they look to be similar fun guns without the cost of the K98.

Mine is s tack driver with PPU 196 grain ammo. Putting a Bad Ace scout scope mount on it so I can better see the sighting system.

Yes, K98 s are expensive! I'm glad I picked up my M48 s when I did. They are great rifles. Don't think I've ever seen that metal plate on the stock though. What does it say?

Most 8mm Mausers (not all - there's as many Mauser variants as the day is long) have a washer in the stock that helps with taking down the bolt, but the Czechs excluded that for whatever reason. It's usually right where that metal plate is.

Other than that, the Mauser action is foolproof and the Czechs don't skimp on build quality. I'll bet you anything that it's a shooter.

What was the small silver plate on the stock? Just an ID perhaps? I was under the impression that most of these didn’t see service, but based on the nrk1 hand carved on the stock, I am assuming it was issued.

The Yugoslavians / Serbian have made shorter style stocks that fit the M48 actions and sold rifles with both as the Zastava M98 (note - not K98, not Czechoslovakian VZ-24, not Polish WZ-29, etc.). They're of the European "Pig Back" style with great drop at the heel than Monte Carlo r American style rifle stocks.

I think Boyd's still offers a shorter stock for the M48 action, generally also called a Yugoslavian Intermediate length action, as it's designed specifically for the 8X57mmIS cartridge. The M48 actions can be used for builds of rifles using ?X57mm and ?X51mm cartridges but not ?X63mm or ?X64mm cartridges like the 30-06 Springfield family or Brenneke family of cartridges.
