Last week my son turned seven. He received a H&R Handi Rifle Compact 7mm-08. I had the trigger reduced from 8.5 lbs to 3.1 lbs. The rifle is topped off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9-40 set in Warne Maxima Rings. He has been shooting (.22's) for the last two years.
We went to the range Friday and dialed it in. He shot from the Lead Sled at 100 yards and hit the bull dead center and shot a 1/2 inch group. I set up a wiper fluid jug at 100 yards and put him on sandbags. He blew up the jug and had a 1 inch group on the target. We were shooting the 140 gr Remington Managed Recoil.
Yesterday morning we ventured off to the deer woods. We climbed into the box stand at 0530. The temp was around 40 degrees. At 0750 out stepped a deer broadside at 75 yards. I set the rifle up and when he settled in behind it I reminded him to breathe, put the crosshairs on the shoulder, and squeeze the trigger. He reminded me to cover his left eye. Once he had confirmed his target I calmly told him to shoot. He shot and the deer did a nose dive. He turned to me and asked "Did I hit it?" and I replied "Son you just killed your first deer!" After calling Mom and much celebration we climbed down to locate his deer. The deer was 10 yards in the brush piled up. I pulled it out and we celebrated even more. His Trophy Buck was a 130 lb spike with a through and through shoulder shot!
I hope he will cherish that moment for the rest of his life, I know I will.
