Last week my son turned seven. He received a H&R Handi Rifle Compact 7mm-08. I had the trigger reduced from 8.5 lbs to 3.1 lbs. The rifle is topped off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9-40 set in Warne Maxima Rings. He has been shooting (.22's) for the last two years.

We went to the range Friday and dialed it in. He shot from the Lead Sled at 100 yards and hit the bull dead center and shot a 1/2 inch group:what:. I set up a wiper fluid jug at 100 yards and put him on sandbags. He blew up the jug and had a 1 inch group on the target. We were shooting the 140 gr Remington Managed Recoil.

Yesterday morning we ventured off to the deer woods. We climbed into the box stand at 0530. The temp was around 40 degrees. At 0750 out stepped a deer broadside at 75 yards. I set the rifle up and when he settled in behind it I reminded him to breathe, put the crosshairs on the shoulder, and squeeze the trigger. He reminded me to cover his left eye:D. Once he had confirmed his target I calmly told him to shoot. He shot and the deer did a nose dive. He turned to me and asked "Did I hit it?" and I replied "Son you just killed your first deer!" After calling Mom and much celebration we climbed down to locate his deer. The deer was 10 yards in the brush piled up. I pulled it out and we celebrated even more. His Trophy Buck was a 130 lb spike with a through and through shoulder shot!

I hope he will cherish that moment for the rest of his life, I know I will.

Grats...

to both you AND yr son, 1Percenter! It appears that you both are Doing It Right. Bet that deer will eat particularly well, too!

Congrats to both of you. It will surely be a memory to last a lifetime. I have to say, and not in a durogatory way, that his being in front of his rifles muzzle in the first picture bothers me some.

Thanks, all. chas08, I can assure you it was unloaded, checked before we got in the truck, when we got out of the truck, and again before the picture.

Congrats to you first of all, and your son second....it's a great moment.

My 6yo took his first deer back in September, he can't wait for trout season now.

Most excellent!!
Looking at the photos he really did drill that deer.

Excellent training and follow through! Now set the table and enjoy!
I can only hope to take my daughter hunting in a few years. We shall see!

There's nothing like it in the world. Congrats to your son and you for raising him how it should be.

It's good to come on this sight and know that there's still people in the world that are real, a big thumbs up to your son and to you brother for raising him right, I have a 6 year old and he just started yote hunting with me recently so I can imagine the pride you feel man. Again CONGRATS to you and little man.

Thanks harryheadshot. My father passed away when I was 14 so I only got to hunt with him for a few years and those are some fond memories. I want my boys to learn how to do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons and learn the "true" meaning of hunting. They love sausage and roasts and fully understand where it comes from. Now, I have an eleven year old (who was actually in the stand on this hunt and let his younger step-brother take the shot) and a soon to be six year old and maybe my wife who are next.
Again, thanks to all of the members for your responses.
