My super-ultra-lightweight AR15

Right, I bought all the components separately and only bought a stripped Carbon-15 Upper. The Upper assembled just like an aluminum Upper (without forward assist or ejection port cover).

Also, the Cav Arms Lower with its integral buttstock and pistol grip is lighter than a Carbon-15 Lower.

Thanks for all of the kind words. I would like to get this gun under 5 lb without sacrificing performance or reliability. Any suggestions?

How long is the barrel? If it's 16", you could have a gunsmith cut it down so that it is just a hair over 16" with the flash suppressor, and permanently attach the flash suppressor to keep it Title 1.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know if this particular barrel can be shortened and rethreaded properly. It is a Bushmaster Superlight and it flares out at the muzzle to accomdate the flash hider threads.

I do not want to lose the flashlight as I personally think a defense carbine is worthless without a good light.

Wrong color? Would you prefer pink? Cav Arms did make pink ones :p

Ya looking at it, other than drilling a bunch of holes in it, you could get a class 3 and make it a 7.5" SBR. :) That would lighten it up!

I was gonna say get a skeletonized buttstock but i noticed its allll part of the lower. There is no breaking point i can see.

Looks awesome though as is :) Good Job!

I like it a lot, but have 1 queston... How many rounds of rapid fire do you think it would take to turn it into a 5lb 1oz plastic blob on the range floor? Just kidding :neener:

Would it make a difference if you installed a really light free float tube with plastic magpul sights, and used a smaller gas block?

I haven't done the above but just wanted to comment on how cool that superlight is. Looks great, I'd be proud to own that rifle.

How does the upper take the heat? I've heard of plastic lowers but not much about uppers. Plastics these days are incredible

Not as many as you would think. I've melted two of the Bushmaster uppers and changed out two others that had been melted. Not a rifle that I would want to bet my life on.

sonrider 657:

I have several of the Cavalry Arms lowers that I have not been able to build yet, but my goal was to have something as close to an m1 carbine in concept but in a 5.56 format. I understand Brownells may have the remaining stock of lowers if anyone is interested in a Cav AR 15 buildup. I bought mine for around $110 each.

The Cav Arms lower is about a pound lighter than going with a separate receiver and buttstock.

My suggestion to your question on getting the weight down a little more would be to buy a 14.5" barrel (CMMG is one source) with a permanently attached (welded) flashhider to bring it past the 16" requirement. I don't have a 14.5" barrel, so I haven't weighed it against a thin 16" barrel to see what, if any, the weight savings might be. The CMMG profile looks like a M4 shape which should be heavier than the thin 16" barrel you have. There is someone out there who will re-profile the barrel for you but that obviously adds to the cost. Also, you have to consider the lower velocity you get from a 14.5" barrel versus a 16" barrel.

I wish someone made a 14.5 inch thin barrel - with a chrome lining.

If you don't mind revealing your source, where were you able to obtain the carbon bushmaster upper? I didn't see it on their website the last time I checked, but I may have overlooked it.

Great looking rifle - I personally wouldn't change anything as it is about as light as you are going to get.

Very very nice. Is the stock adjustable or fit you? If you remove the elzetta and light it might be even lighter.

OP (Sonrider657), can you maybe post a full parts roster for those of us that can't tell from the pictures?

I have 2 desires to be met by the AR Platform and you just filled 1 of them, the lightest .223/5.56 I can get. The other is a .308 Winchester big game gun with 20" Barrel I can shoot 200 yards with, but that's another thread.

Here are the specs:
Bushmaster Carbon-15 Upper (bought this used)
Bushmaster Superlight 16" chome-lined barrel, 1-in-7" twist
A2 Flash Suppressor
Magpul MBUS rear sight, Flat Dark Earth
Magpul MOE Handgard, Flat Dark Earth
Elzetta ZFH1500 Light Mount with Thumb Screw, Dark Earth
Surefire G2 Light with Malkoff M60 LED Module (235 lumens)
Cavalry Arms MkII Lower, Coyote Brown
Standard GI Lower Parts Kit
Chrome Bolt Carrier Group

FWIW, you can actually get an AR under 4 pounds.

Here's one I built for a guy many years ago. He spec'd it out.
The barrel is only .375" in diameter. Caliber is 17 Mach 4.

Sonrider, you can get a smooth low profile Upper from DPMS. If you loose the brass deflector and the ejection port cover that would knock the weight down a little bit.

Also i agree a flashlight is a necessity for HD, but im thinking to loose a little more weight maybe take off the big flashlight mount, get a low profile gas block, loose the A2 front sight and get yourself a little flashlight mount that will mount the light to the Magpul MOE handguard. :) just my .02 cents

BUT like i said before... its a beautiful gun as is! Good Job!

Waterhouse, I find it hysterical that the thread you linked was started by the very same username that started this one. I can't say for sure it's the same guy, but it is the same username: sonrider657
