I got a pleasant surprise in my Criminal Justice recitation this week. This week was the third week of class and one of the topics of discussion was guns and crime. At the beginning I was a bit leery of how this will go. The Teachers Assistant seems like a pretty nice gun but I didn't know his stance on gun ownership. To start off the discussion he asked for a show of hands of gun owners, gun ownership supportors, and non gun ownership supportors. First I was surprised at the overwhelming number of gun owners/supportors. Then came the big surprise, the stated that one of his hobbies is collecting assualt rifles and he believes we should have the right to do so. Then he asked if I would give my opinion on the matter because I was member of our university shooting team and was traveling to Europe next week to represent our university at the college world championship. I relied that while I didn't have a particular interest in assualt rifles, I supported his right to own them. Already, I was thinking this is good as the class was shown two very positive examples of gun owners.
Moreso, I was doubly impressed that he presented the gun/crime debate in a very unbiased, factual way and let the students form their own opinions.
All and all my my best day of class ever.
