I thought I would show my current iteration of my truck gun and see what others are using, keeping in mind I always have a pistol on also, usually a full size Sig P320 RX when I'm travelling. My requirement was 5.56/.223 chambered, light, simple and as short as possible.

This is my well used Keltec SU-16C, I painted it years ago when I was going through a phase. I much prefer the C to the A or B models due to the sight setup being much more rugged and the threaded medium weight barrel. I've changed out the rear sight to a Techsight adjustable and it's just enough taller than the factory rear to give me a good lower 1/3 co-witness with the Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. I added the Keltec sling swivels when I bought this new when they first came out. About a year ago I found a very cheap and lightweight 200 lumen light (Monstrum on Amazon) and a super-light offset mount (Waltis on Amazon) so added a light. It folds up to under 26" and the total weight is 6.1 pounds with a loaded 20 round magazine.

When new it took about 150 rounds to get it broken in but since then it has been 100% reliable (I estimate I have less than 2000 rounds through it total), I even shot it in a couple of 3 gun events just to see how it would do (hint: it's not fast to reload because mags don't drop free). It shoots 52 gr. JHP loads 1.5-1.75" at 100 yards and I don't need better than that for a truck gun. It's sighted in using the Marine Corp 36 yard zero because, well Marine Corp, what other reason do you need?

The only downside I have seen with my setup is there is no room on the handguard to add doo-dads, but I make up for some of that with other rifles, and the built in bipod is the next thing to useless, on mine it changes POI by 5-6" at 100 yards, but I don't ever plan to use it anyway.

The paint is Krylon Fusion Camo and has held up really well on the plastic Keltec but I haven't tried it on metal.

Good choice due to the folding stock IMO. Have you thought about adding a flash hider and perhaps a barrel clamp flashlight mount? Would something on the barrel interfere with the folding stock?

You could clamp on the barrel with no problem but I worry about effects on accuracy. I keep thinking about adding a linear compensator to it to direct concussion forward but just haven't gotten around to it. I use the Kaw Valley linear comps on my Ruger PCC and a 16" AR and they really do seem to help. I only shoot this every 2-3 months and just shoot one magazine through it to make sure it's still running so it hasn't been a priority.

I've always liked the look of those things. Kel-Tec and their somewhat dubious history of quality control and durability kept me from committing to buying one. That mixed with the fallen prices of AR carbines has also greatly reduced the desire. But that is a fair looking setup. Paint job also looks pretty good.

I understand those feelings, back when I got this they were $399 at the gun show and real AR's were running $800+, this was cheap enough it could be a throw away gun. I have to say that KT has an excellent reputation for service though, I've never had to use it but others tell me when you send one back they do whatever they have to to get it running.

They will never be as solid as a mid range AR though, my M&P Sport II and Rock River ATH will always be better guns. But the M&P with red dot, back up sights, light and magazine weighs 8.7 pounds and the Rock River with an 18" heavy barrel, 1-6 optic, backup sights and mag weighs over 10. Even the AR pistol I just finished building last week weighs 7 pounds loaded up.

i have not seen much of anything in person at most of my lgs other than the pistols and a 2000 carbine. these or the shotguns are very elusive. that too is part of an issue i cant see ordering a gun I cant hold first.

I like that paint job. Looks OEM. Only truck gun I ever had was when I lived out on the high plains of North Dakota. Mini 14 with the metal folding stock. It never left the truck back then. Different times.

While I prefer a .30 caliber rifle such as the M1 or M14, there are some hollow tipped hunting loads for the .223 that can make it pretty effective for up to coyote sized game within 200 yards.

Those linear comps are a nice touch. You have a nice set up.
My truck gun is a Savage Axis in 22-250. I think we are planning for different vermin.

I suppose it could affect accuracy, but perhaps it would be a simple poi shift as opposed to increased group sizes. I've never used one but the ones I've seen appear to be intended for shotguns. That light mount just bothers me, but if it works it works.
As for a muzzle device the KAK comps and a2 flash hidersare quite cheap, I also have a kaw valley ar9 bolt and it works quite we'll, can't speak on their muzzle devices. I've never shot 5.56 with a bare muzzle so I'm not sure how bad it is.
Also, is that a 16 inch barrel?

Dang, I'd buy one now for 399.

I keep mine pretty simple, short enough to get into action and quiet enough to not blow out my ear drums if I shoot out the passenger side window.
