I thought I would show my current iteration of my truck gun and see what others are using, keeping in mind I always have a pistol on also, usually a full size Sig P320 RX when I'm travelling. My requirement was 5.56/.223 chambered, light, simple and as short as possible.
This is my well used Keltec SU-16C, I painted it years ago when I was going through a phase. I much prefer the C to the A or B models due to the sight setup being much more rugged and the threaded medium weight barrel. I've changed out the rear sight to a Techsight adjustable and it's just enough taller than the factory rear to give me a good lower 1/3 co-witness with the Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. I added the Keltec sling swivels when I bought this new when they first came out. About a year ago I found a very cheap and lightweight 200 lumen light (Monstrum on Amazon) and a super-light offset mount (Waltis on Amazon) so added a light. It folds up to under 26" and the total weight is 6.1 pounds with a loaded 20 round magazine.
When new it took about 150 rounds to get it broken in but since then it has been 100% reliable (I estimate I have less than 2000 rounds through it total), I even shot it in a couple of 3 gun events just to see how it would do (hint: it's not fast to reload because mags don't drop free). It shoots 52 gr. JHP loads 1.5-1.75" at 100 yards and I don't need better than that for a truck gun. It's sighted in using the Marine Corp 36 yard zero because, well Marine Corp, what other reason do you need?
The only downside I have seen with my setup is there is no room on the handguard to add doo-dads, but I make up for some of that with other rifles, and the built in bipod is the next thing to useless, on mine it changes POI by 5-6" at 100 yards, but I don't ever plan to use it anyway.
The paint is Krylon Fusion Camo and has held up really well on the plastic Keltec but I haven't tried it on metal.
