So, my wife has never been anti, has always supported my decision to carry, but has never shown the desire to do so herself, with the exception of a brief period last year, when a neighbor was having some trouble with an abusive husband.
So, a couple months ago, I was shocked to hear her mention getting her CHL. I really tried not to push her on it, though I was thrilled. As time went on, she started mentioning it more often, and decided she should go ahead with it. She grew up around guns, but never handled them much herself, and is a little, no, a lot nervous around them.
She signed up for a safety class at a local range, and is on her way to class even as I type this. She had decided it would be better if she had her own gun prior to the class, so she'd be more comfortable with it. She asked me for my thoughts on a firearm, and also did quite a bit of reseach on the web.
On Mother's day, after opening the new Benchmade I got her(lol), we went to the gun shop, where she decided on a Taurus snubbie in .357 with a concealed hammer. Nice little piece.
Since then, she has decided she wants to carry it more than just to and from our studio when she works(she is a belly dancer), and may actually carry most of the time.
What a difference in a few months. On the radio a few days ago, we heard about a woman who'd been held at knifepoint and forced to drive to a remote location. My wife's first words were,"why the H$%#& didn't she have a gun?". She then realized what she'd said, and was a little surprised. It's a remarkable(and pleasing) change I've seen in her.
Any of y'all know a holster maker who caters to the female crowd? I'm having a hard time convincing her to spend more money for a pricey carry rig, especially as I am comfortable with my $30 Don Hume. We are having trouble finding carry gear for her gun, being a 7 shot snubbie in .357.
Input from the females would be great, if any of you can suggest what works for you. My wife has an hourglass type body,I know body shape can make a difference when choosing a holster for women.

fjolnirsson,

Congrats to you and to her. :D

Re finding a holster that works with a woman's curves, there are a couple of articles on my site that she may want to look at. Straight Talk About Curves and Holster Talk together give a pretty good overview of possibilities. Holster Talk is a cheat sheet which should make it easier for her to talk knowledgeably with holster-makers as she shops. Also I've recently put up some photos/articles about making concealed carry work with regular women's clothing, so she should visit the table of contents to see what else looks interesting to her.

One manufacturer she may want to Google up is Rusty Sherrick -- I don't have his URL offhand -- who makes some very well-designed holsters for women.

The other site your wife might to check out is www.womensholsters.com This is Cunningham Custom Leather, a holster business owned by a woman who got frustrated with trying to find suitable holsters and finally decided to make her own. Even if you don't buy anything from her, there's an article titled "how to choose" on her site which is probably the best thing on the web for explaining how women's holsters are different from men's holsters, and why it matters.

If she prefers kydex instead of leather, have her check out Comp-Tac's CTAC holster, and Blade-Tech's Ultimate Concealment Holster. Both of these are kydex IWB's with a tuckable feature. I've used both and like both.

HTH!

Thanks to all of you for the input. My wife just finished her concealed carry last weekend and the links are helpful. We have been going through the same dilemma to find a good holster for her snub nose. THR is an awesome source! Thanks again!

:what:  :what: IT'S NOT FAIR!!!! You get a woman who's a stripper & likes guns!!! I'm reeking with jealousy & "Tag" deoderant, which by the way does NOT work like in the commercial, & I'm still alone!!:D :D :( :( :banghead: :banghead: :(

My wife may very well read this later, and would be greatly offended , no angered, to be referred to as a stripper. What she does is not stripping. She does have a student who strips to pay for school, nothing wrong with it. But it isn't what my wife does.
I do appreciate the attempt at humor. And no, it really isn't fair.:neener:

"There's a big difference between belly dancing and stripping."

:uhoh: I wasn't aware of that. Really. Honest. Sorry to have offended you fjolnirsson.

fjolnirsson

Perhaps you can recommend to our young friend some source of enlightenment on belly dancing. The last show I saw had Arab women standing on chairs ululating calls of encouragement.

Glad to hear your wife has chosen to carry, fjolnirsson! :D Congrats to you both.
My husband at first did not fully support me "packing" after my decision to pursue my permit to carry, but I am thankful he has changed his tune since then (April 2004).
I have not experimented with many holsters, as I really liked the first one I tried. So far, I carry revolvers, usually snubbie J frame or K frame S&W's and use Bianchi Black Widow #5 holsters (high ride on outside of belt). I am hoping to find another option that would work better for summertime and warm weather carry though.
Best of luck to you both!

Well then how 'bout we ALL use the "EDIT" feature on this site to delete our comments and the comments we've quoted rather than just apologizing?

Congrats BTW on having a "like minded" wife.

The first time my wife came over to my house (when we were dating) and I told her that I liked pistols, she told me she had a CCW and carried a Taurus PT99 in her car! I knew right then I was going to MARRY that woman!

I have never been able to get her to carry ON HER PERSON very often, which has resulted in one stolen pistol I'm sorry to say, but I'm still trying. I did install a quick access lock box in her vehicle however. Baby steps...

SWEEEET your wife's a dancer! :D I'm a dancer too...but just ballroom (mostly Latin, but the Standard dances are fun too). I'm trying to hunt down a studio which will teach ballet without focusing on performance—I'm a guy and want it for technique, not because I want to be a fairyfoot. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

Uhh...yeah. Perhaps you should also have your wife consider a nice flat semiauto for when she's wearing tight(er) clothing, along with that revolver for "normal" wear?

whats not been mentioned;will she use it if she needs to realising what will happen to the bg she uses it on?

if she wont itll be sensed by the bg who will disarm her and use it on her and perhaps other innocents.

if she cant shoot to stop and perhaps kill a bad guy may i recomend peppermace and instruction in its use and limitation.

perhaps im belaboring the obvious if so my apologies.

A 5-shot 357/38 might be more comfortable.
And another opportunity to buy another revolver.
Seven rounds of .357 might get a little heavy, unless she goes with the velcro-compartment purse. And even then.

The only thing that comes to mind which would be accessable when wearing a seatbelt would be a small belly sack with the velcro-accessable pouch.

Personally, I wedge a revolver behind the passenger seat, an easy reach while I'm strapped in. IWB for walking.

The .38 Special should be enough punch to knock an attacker into the next world, but caliber is her choice.

My gal has a .22LR 8-shot Airweight and a 6-shot S&W for home use. She doesn't carry yet. That's my job; I do it well, and she walks secure in the thought that her guy is packing. Even though she is a liberal Democrat.

Does your wife normally carry a bag or purse? If so, any decent tailor/seamstress/saddle-maker should be able to add a holster to it. you might even consider unstiching the linning and using Velcro to create a concealed pocket. This way you don't have to buy a new purse or outfit that might not fit her style just to conceal the gun.

Hey guys,

It isn't always (nor even usually) necessary to carry in a purse! There are lots and lots of other options, most of them more secure, more accessible, and less hassle than carrying off body.

Off-body carry is the last resort. Sometimes necessary, but not a great first choice.

There's a Persian restaurant that I go to with my brother-in-law's family. (If you've never eaten Persian...mmm) They have belly dancers, and I wouldn't lump them into the same group as strippers. Belly dancing is artful and takes skill. Though it is a bit "racy," it's many levels above stripping, which is only to entice sexual arousal. I guess the difference is that belly dancing doesn't come off as sleazy, and women aren't offended by it.

Of course, if she's wearing the same attire as the belly dancers I've seen, where does she conceal a .38?

decides to carry

:) Oh my gosh. I can almost feel/hear the tears of joy/pride welling up in all you guys' eyes. (As it should be!)

Congrats to your wife . . and to you.
I hope someday I will make that same choice.
