Officer, suspect injured in Myrtle Beach gunfight
Man charged after shooting at police
By Kurt Knapek -
A Myrtle Beach police officer shot and wounded a man who was firing at him with an assault rifle late Friday during a gun battle in a Cedar Street parking lot, authorities said.
The officer, Jeff Thomas, suffered minor injuries believed to be from glass from his broken windshield, but he was not shot, said Capt. David Knipes, spokesman for Myrtle Beach Police Department.
The suspect - identified as Nigel Anthony Sylvester, 28, of Edgewood Drive, Myrtle Beach - was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, according to an arrest warrant.
Sylvester was hospitalized Friday night at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, but was released Saturday morning and placed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway.
Around 10:45 p.m., Thomas was responding to several reports of gunfire near Third Avenue North between Ocean Boulevard and Kings Highway, when he noticed a Jeep Cherokee with two people inside driving erratically, Knipes said.
When Thomas stopped the Jeep in the 100 block of Cedar Street in the parking lot of Carolina Breeze Apartments, the suspect got out and began firing with a .223-caliber Sturm Ruger assault rifle, police said.
As the suspect's bullets hit the windshield of Thomas' patrol car, Thomas returned fire and shot the driver, Knipes said.
When another officer arrived, he reported that he saw the suspect "laying motionless" on the ground and Thomas standing over him, according to a police report.
The male passenger from the Jeep fled during the shooting, and had not been caught as of Saturday afternoon.
Thomas was treated and released at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Knipes said.
Knipes said the State Law Enforcement Division will investigate the incident because it involved a police officer.
Thomas, in his fourth year with the department, is on administrative leave pending SLED's investigation, Knipes said.
Anyone with information about the passenger in the vehicle is asked to call the Myrtle Beach Police Department at 918-1382.
