Is this guy for real? What would the uproar be if a white mayor - let's use Bloomberg as an example - mentioned he wanted to make his city (New York) white? And the "God is mad at America" - what kind of screwball have they elected in New Orleans?

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- Mayor Ray Nagin on Monday called for the rebuilding of a "chocolate New Orleans" that maintains the city's black majority, saying, "You can't have New Orleans no other way."

"I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day," Nagin said in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day speech. "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be."

Uptown is a reference to a mostly white part of the city.

Pressed later to explain his comments, Nagin, who is black, told CNN affiliate WDSU-TV that he was referring to creation of a racially diverse city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, insisting that his remarks were not divisive.

"How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said.

"New Orleans was a chocolate city before Katrina. It is going to be a chocolate city after. How is that divisive? It is white and black working together, coming together and making something special."

Before Hurricane Katrina inundated the city with floodwaters in August, forcing its residents to evacuate, about two-thirds of New Orleans' population of 485,000 was black.

However, the worst of the flooding was in mostly black areas that remain largely uninhabitable, while residents in mostly white areas that were less badly damaged have been able to return home -- prompting speculation that the much-smaller city could end up with a white majority if large numbers of black evacuees do not return.

Black residents and political leaders have complained about the slow pace of recovery in mostly black areas compared to mostly white areas such as Uptown and the French Quarter, where services have been restored and life has returned to a semblance of normal.

In his speech, Nagin also said "God is mad at America," in part because he does not approve "of us being in Iraq under false pretenses."

"He is sending hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it is destroying and putting stress on this country," Nagin said.

He said God is "upset at black America also."

"We are not taking care of ourselves. We are not taking care of our women, and we are not taking care of our children when you have a community where 70 percent of its children are being born to one parent."

Nagin, first elected in 2002, had been due to come up for re-election next month. However, state officials postponed the city election until April because of the disruptions caused by Katrina.

I thought the point of analogy was to give an example to make a concept easier to understand.

Evidently I was wrong.

insert foot in mouth. sounds like he tried to do a quick save a little later in the day. so not only is he a racist, he has no backbone.....great leader.

A friend of mine, who grew up in Montgomery, AL, told me a story about his father, a doctor, who donated an evening every week or two weeks working in the county hospital's emergency room.

One night he was treating a man who had been stabbed. He asked, "Who did this?"

"My husband-in-law."

"Your husband-in-law? How can that be?"

"We's both married to the same woman." :D

+1. That's what I thought when I heard the chocolate milk comment to the reporter after the original chocolate statement. He also said God wants a black New Orleans. How the hell does he know what God wants? Moron.

Wow.
I had not heard this before. Why do I smell fraud, lies and deceit?

Like most of our elected officals, the Peter principal fits.

What this mayor has said seems to be the worst kind of racism, in my opinion. What he favors is total discrimination; he is discriminating against white, latin, asian or other races and/or ethnic origin in favor of blacks for "his city". My assessment is that Mayor Nagin's statement is the worst instance of racism on record: total discrimination by a politican and mayor in terms of who he wants to be among and around.

:uhoh:

This statement by the mayor should concern the white, latin, asian and other non-black inhabitants of New Orleans as they lost the most lives and suffered the greatest loss during the recent natural disaster. Your mayor does not like you or want you around. That is a man-made disaster equally as bad.

The implications of such a statement by the New Orleans mayor, combined with recent incidents of police corruption and the earlier instances of firearms prohibition by the authorities, spell a dire future for New Orleans.

Is anyone paying attention?

He said God is "upset at black America also."

Well, at least he got that part right.

I think I can translate his statement . . .

"If our black constituants don't start returning to New Orleans faster, I will not be reelected in the up comming election by the white folks returning to New Orleans."

Is it possible for a black man to be a racist ?

I was told by our diversity person at work that as a white male, under the age of 50 that I COULD NOT be a victim of discrimination. So, it might not be possible for him to be a racist.

After he loses his office, he can join the professional "black leader" industry and tour the country attending protests, etc.

After hearing Nagin speak, it's clear that your typical white Klan member has an equally unsavory black counterpart. :barf:

He sure knows how to throw out the welcome mat for the non-balck business owners of New Orleans. Hopefully, he will be out in the next election.

...While Mr. Nagin has made his stance a lot clearer than he might in hindsight have liked to, we would do well to realize that he is still, just as he was while the city flooded, all talk and no action.

He's not out at the city gates, axe-handle at the ready, turning away anyone he doesn't deem chocolate enough and he does not appear to have sent police out on that errand, either.

All mouth. My heavens, do you suppose the man's a -- politician?

Anyway, he's out. He'd probably be out if he had driven busloads of people out of town ahead of the hurricaine with his own hands. Elected leaders don't usually survive a disaster of that magnitude, even if elections are set back a few months.

Everybody wave bye-bye! Bye-bye, Mayor Nagin! Bye-bye!

proof once more that even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while:

the temptation to call him a perfect maroon is tempered by the fact that no one is perfect!:neener:
