This was a hard-fought legislative battle, and some if not many supporters despaired of it ever passing ... but it has.

Gun-rights bill passes General Assembly
Submitted by cjarvis on 2013-07-23 19:11

Legislation that expands the public places where people with permits to carry concealed handguns can bring their weapons, toughens the penalties for some gun crimes, closes a loophole in the handgun permit system, and strengthens federal background checks passed the House and Senate on Tuesday night.

Missing from the compromise bill worked out between the two chambers was the Senate’s controversial provision that would have repealed the current law that requires county sheriffs to conduct background checks and issue handgun purchase permits.

The votes were largely along party lines. The House voted 73-41, and the Senate 32-14.

I've been waiting for the moment that we join the ranks of states that allow
conceal carry in restaurants that serve alcohol, at parades and funerals, in
school crossing zones and other areas not mentioned. The State Legislature
and all of those who supported this measure deserve a big salute for making
North Carolina a safer state and a freer state for responsible gun owners.
I might have to go out and find another conceal carry gun next month to
celebrate!

Good for NC, it's always a good day when rights are restored.
A couple things that this news brings to mind is the number of states that while allowing the concealed carry of guns, impose enough restrictions to effectively neuter our ability to carry in many ways. I also note that this and many votes on the 2a do strongly divide on party lines and I encourage all voters to continue to fight for full rights of personal defense and also let our elected officials know we are watching no matter what their affiliation and vote accordingly.
