Anyone watch this last night where they found the body of a dead Muslim Marine in an alley that had been shot with his own service pistol? During the conversation one of the agents said it must be bad to be shot with your own weapon and Ducky says that according to statistics 70% of all shootings are done with the owners on gun.:what: Where did this statistic come from? Didn't realize that David McCallam was an ANTI or the show either, may have to find something else to watch at 7:00 on Tuesday night.

They make up everything else on the show, what makes you think they would not make up bogus statistics? Its fiction. Enjoy it if you want, but don't criticize it for not being realistic. Even the reality shows are not real.

70% of all shootings are done with the owners own gun.

Well, darn, I hope so. I sure don't plan on using someone else's gun to defend myself unless I have to. :D

But seriously, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a single show on television that doesn't have the anti-gun dribble in it somehow. And some of the shows are absolutely saturated with it.

NCIS has an extremely loose relationship to facts, on pretty much EVERYTHING, not just guns. Its the major reason I stopped watching the show.

It's Hollyweird, What do you expect ?
If you want facts contact the NRA or GAO,
f you want entertainment watch the Boob Tub......

just a show with their own statistics if you like it keep watching it haven't hurt nobody at least just yet

If any large percentage of people were killed with their own gun, WHY ARE WE LETTING OUR POLICE CARRY THEM?

If people were so likely to have them taken away, why are departments still giving them to their officers? Shouldn't police cheifs everywhere be disarming their officers right now?

After all, if people were more likely to be killed with their own gun, we shouldn't be putting our officers in such danger.

We should be purposely arming criminals! After all, it would just be giving them something more likely to be used against them, right?

If a higher percentage of people were killed with their own guns, it would only make sense to take the weapons away from our police and give them to criminals. That way, a higher percentage of criminals could be killed with their own guns!

Brilliant! I've solved it!

That episode last night was rubbish from start to finish. I hate preachy-TV. I wonder if it had anything to do with the writer's strike.

Gee, and no comments about why (1) a US Marine was illegally carrying a concealed pistol (apparently government property to boot), in civilian clothes, off duty, in Washington D.C.? and (2) why he had a full beard? The fact that this didn't even come up actually tends to indicate that NCIS, like all Bellasario's shows, support our 2A rights.

I sincerely doubt David McCallum wrote the line, which is the only way I'd blame him for it. It was written by an out-of-work screenwriter.
As far as "realism" NCIS is a fictional drama show and I would no more consider anything in it to be any more realistic, than, say ... The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was forty years ago.

I don't think that's actually that far from the truth.

Think about how many gun deaths are there a year? How many of them are suicides?

Seems on average there's about 30k gun deaths per year. 17-18k are suicides. ~1k are accidental.

So technically, just about 60% of gun deaths each year are by people shooting themselves (presumably with their own gun - no data on this either) either intentionally or not. I'm sure some percentage are homicides by their own gun too (someone steals a gun via burglarly and then shoots the homeowner when he gets home for example). I couldn't find any data on that either though.

Technically speaking that makes the 70% number not too far off the mark, regardless. It doesn't mean anything, but technically it may be close. The problem is when you twist that statistic that makes it sound like gun ownership is dangerous. Sure it's dangerous, if you plan on killing yourself.

Dope

NCIS is one of my favorite shows. It is entertainment and I don't worrry about their facts. Almost all TV shows are anti-gun because the writers are anti-gun and they let it show sometimes. I think the statistic is pretty bogus (or a bit twisted) and relates to the common anti-gun argument against self defense that your gun will be (maybe) taken away from you and used on you. At least, I want a fighting chance. That is all I ask.

30%

I'll agree with smokingator,I am a fan of the show, saw last nights show also and I thought it was 30%.The show has been on the air for about three years now and I've not seen anything that makes me think that they are anti gun in any episode. Nothing compares to what Rosie O'DONNEL did to Tom Selik on the View.

An old-time newspaperman once told me that when making up statistics, always add a decimal point; it makes it look like you did your homework, and the idiot readers think it is gospel. Adding two decimal points makes it seem even more accurate.

So,

87.2% of newpaper stories use fabricated "facts" or statistics.

97.36% of television news reports are fake, written in the studio.

76.9% of gun control supporters are crooks.

82.34% of NRA members beat their dogs.

99.3% of those reading this are blind.

77.6% of those who get their news from the radio are deaf.

And so on. Don't those "statistics" sound good?

Who cares? Pauley Perrette was in it!

 Whatta hottie!

No, but I just watched the Monk episode where they said the .454 Casull is used mainly as an elephant gun.

RKBABob, would you like Pauley if you found out in real life she dresses and acts like a librarian? :D

I get a kick out of how the show has turned NCIS into a mini-CIA.
:D

Right. That's the funny part about the whole show not the non-facts that are written into the scripts. NCIS is a mix of the CIA, NSA, FBI, DIA all rolled into one.

Still, having said that, it's one of the better shows on TV these days. Of course that's not saying much.

I got a kick out of the script about 3 months ago when they even specifically mentioned my little town. Someone had rented a car at our car rental location near the train station. :D :D We have one stop light, a tiny post office, and one very small grocery store - that's it. The trains do go through town - at about 60 miles an hour! The station itself is non-existent these days and has been ever since John Singleton Mosby raided it a little while back. ;)

RKBABob, would you like Pauley if you found out in real life she dresses and acts like a librarian?
May I answer for him? Yes!
