Nebulous Terms and Silly Gun Expressions

Ok folks, it was either on this forum or another that shall remain nameless but someone was keeping a hilarious list of quasi-gun terms and silly ideas. Some of that list, that I can remember, where:

  • Stopping Power (often used)
  • Knockdown Power (often used)
  • Energy Dump (way over used)
  • Hydrostatic Shock (also common)
  • Paper Energy vs Energy in the Real World
  • Trauma Waves
  • Etc, etc, etc....
And the list goes downhill from there. I was just wondering what nebulous gun terms or even downright ridiculous, made-up gun expressions have you guys heard during your many years online in gun forums. It's surprising what folks will argue about.

I'm still trying to find that list, it's priceless!

If you had ever shot anything living with a 45 acp you would know stopping power is created by the knockdown power, which is essentially the hydrostatic shock + the energy dump, this creates the real world energy (as opposed to the on paper energy) which transforms to catastrophic trauma waves starting at the point of impact.

I know this because of my high stakes, high security job at a mall where I am under fire daily as part of an elite tactical unit.

SAO.

A single-action trigger is incapable of doing anything more than dropping the cocked hammer, therefore adding "only" is redundant and nonsense.

If an SA trigger could do something else, but is limited to operating in SA mode (like a DAO trigger cannot be operated in SA mode), then "only" would be appropriate. However an SA trigger cannot do anything else.

Jeff Cooper must be spinning in his grave.

Once they added the 20” wheels to the mall’s fleet of Segways, it was all over!

Stay safe.

Thank You for that, now it all makes sense.

Shotties! Using Glock to mean handgun. Aquila to refer to ammunition produced by Aguila (Eagle). Recoil junky. Smokepole, boomstick and any other cute reference to a firearm (including those "short barreled rifle" and "short barreled shotgun" references cooked up solely for use in the NFA). Saturday night specials and other terms which disparage a tool that is affordable.

These are all relatively minor annoyances, but they are my pet peeves.

"better than nothing" - That may be true, but is hardly a lofty goal
"wouldn't want / nobody volunteer to get shot with it" - Duh. I don't want to get shot by a BB, that doesn't make a BB quickly incapacitating.

"nobody notices, or cares" - As related to obvious printing or open carry. You don't know either for sure, only that nobody said anything.

You will perhaps recall that Jeff Cooper said that what we now call DAO is really a single action because the trigger cocking action only works one way.

I disagree, I think that's needlessly pedantic. Your statement is correct, but using SAO can also help distinguish between DA/SA and SA/SAO.

Please explain to us the difference between SA and SAO that requires "Only" after "Single Action". What other mode can a Single Action trigger mechanism be operated in?

Whereas DA/SA isn't a trigger mechanism. It describes a double-action trigger mechanism on a semi-automatic pistol. The first shot is usually fired in double-action (trigger cocking) mode, then the slide cocks the hammer and subsequent shots are fired in single-action mode.
