Just started to get into neck turning initially for 0.308 Win then 6.5x47 Lapua - trying to make necks uniform and see if it will help accuracy

-Shooting Sako TRG22 0.308
- Neck diameter of fired case is 0.347 in (I understand that the chamber neck diameter would be approximately 0.348 in )
- Neck diameter of loaded factory (FGMM) as well as Lapua handloads is 0.338 in
- Neck diameter of neck turned and loaded Lapua brass is 0.336 in

Will this lead to unacceptable neck chamber clearance?

Thank you for your help

Your .011" between fired & neck turned is a lot to size down. If using bushing dies, it would be done in 2 steps. Users of Lapua brass will tell you NO turning needed, unless using a tight necked chamber. After playing with neck turning myself, i find it useful in a factory chamber using bushing dies when only 1/2 of the neck is sized in 243 win. But i am only sizing down .008" Redding has said, sizing down more than .008" may cause concentric problems and make the neck smaller than whats marked on the bushing. In a 223 Rem factory Savage using standard RCBS dies & neck turning, dont make a whole lot of difference. You should do you own testing to know for sure. SavageAxis223R.jpg

Save yourself a lot of time, and just shoot Lapua brass right out of the box. I tried neck turning other brass, and never could get them to shoot as good as Lapua. Also, 243winxb is correct, going from a .347" neck diameter fired case down to whatever you want it to be, should be done in 2 steps with bushings, otherwise your necks will end up being smaller than the bushing die size.
