I sold a friend a very clean Bulgarian Mak and would like to pick up a few boxes of ammo for him.

You are the go-to guys for this type of question. Where do I find good prices on FMJ? Also, what is good self defense ammo for the Mak? Where would I find a deal on that type of cartridge?

Thanks in advance!

Any "animal brand" ammo should work great in it. (Wolf, Brown/Silver/Gold Bear). If you want to spend more on ammo, you could always get Winchester brand as well. I'd personally just stick to the "commie" ammo, as it shoot just fine.

My local Academy sporting goods store now carries 9mm Mak ammo. I don't know if that helps you, as you are in San Francisco. My Academy carries 5.45x39 also. Both are their Monarch brand, imported from Serbia.

I buy all of my 9x18 from J&G Sales. Try Midway USA or Sportsman's Guide for the Pow'r ball if you don't want him to have FMJ for SD (but with the unreliable expansion and little penetration, I'd suggest your friend use FMJ for SD).

Though I've had plenty of success with Wolf, Wolf "Military Classic" and Brown Bear, I have recently discovered Barnaul's brass-plated steel-case FMJs and find I like them quite a bit. Though not in the same ilk as Winchester, Federal, Sellier&Bellot or Prvi Partizan, it's quite nice and easily my favority at $8.50/50.
Besides, if you don't reload for the 9x18, there's really no reason to consider brass cases a priority for this cartridge, especially since most handguns of this caliber were designed to feed, fire, extract and eject a steel case.

I'm sure there are several places you can find it, though Wideners is where I go for my needs:

This is the best deal, IMHO:
