im using some 165gr cast bullets from missouri bullets in my .30-30 they came in the mail today

ive been using 150 gr jacketed and had 0 issues but i dont wanna pay for them now with the prices going up

the powders ive got are no5 no7 no 9 greendot unique imr 4064 and imr 3031

anyone got a load for me

Greendot or Unique. Lot's of load data out there. I personally use 8gr of Red Dot behind a 180 grain plain base.

Trail Boss is perfect for this if you can find it.

Unique will work as well. Go on the Alliant website.

Back when I loaded 30-30 with a 173 gr.cast bullet I used 22.5 grs. of IMR 3031. Was good out to 300 yards yards for long range Cowboy shooting.

should i just try working up my own load with the 3031?
i was thinking about starting up with 15gr of it

you;ll prolly stick a bullet in the barrel with that light a load of 3031,it's a slow burning 'rifle' powder.
for mild loads, unique is the way to go.
Sounds like you need to buy a LoadBook , or similiar, for multiple 30-30 loads.Mine is 15 miles away right now or I"d share some loads with ya.

I'd think you could use almost any fast to medium powder as long as you keep the velocity low enough so that leading is not a problem.

Don't use anything slower than IMR-3031 because very rarely one hears of cases of detonation (kaboom) with very reduced charges of slow burning powder.

Keep your velocities below 1250 fps or so and you should have no trouble. If you decide to go higher, keep an eye out for leading. People have shot the 30-30 with lead bullets up to 1800 fps with hard bullets and/or gas checks, so it can be done.

Good luck.

WAY too low!

Lyman #49 shows:
Starting load of 22.5 grains IMR-3031 with a 170 grain cast bullet.
1,599 FPS @ 18,300 CUP out of a 24" barrel.
MAX of 28.5 gives 2,095 @ 32,500.

7.0 Unique Starting load should give you 1,211 @ 19,800 CUP.
MAX of 10.6 gives 1,586 - 36,000.

I've used the Lyman 311041 with a gas check for years....drops out of my mould right on 173 grains using straight wheelweights........powder's IMR 3031 at 30.9. Sized to .308.

Load shoots tight groups with my antique SRC and I've killed several deer with that load.............through and through penetration tho, unless you hit bone and then the results are REALLY spectacular.

The .30/30 is an ideal cartridge for cast bullet use...........by the way, that load chrono's at about 2100 out of my rifle and leading is a minimal wash.

You will get better results using either H4198 or one of the 4895 powders. I think 4895 will probably produce the most accurate rounds.

If you want to stick with the powders you already have on hand IMR3031 will probably work well.
