Tomorrow I am going to get a smith and Wesson model 629-5 Trail Boss. It's been on of my frail guns for A long time and has only had a 1/2 box of ammo in it since new! It will come with box and papers, I'm looking for a holster for this new bad boy, something that can be dual used for concealment and field duty, also looking for input on speed strips vs loaders.

+1 for Simply Rugged. I've got a couple of their holsters. The Sourdough Pancake is great. Really supports larger revolvers, and you can carry it strong side or crossdraw.

I carry 4", "N" frame S&W's.
For hunting/field use I like the "El Paso" "Tanker", or whatever they call it.
Works with a coat and backpack, even insulated coveralls if you zip the front down for access.

When it's warmer I use a Kirkpatrick belt rig that's fairly comfortable.

Hey Barry,

An N-frame carried in a Simply Rugged Cross Draw holster not only conceals well, but is very quick out of the leather, should you encounter your cognomen.

Congrats on your acquisition, IIRC the 29-5 comes without the ILS.

Lucky dog.

Speed loaders. I don't believe you can get 44 mag in a Safariland CompIII. Best speed loader on the market. There are a number of others. If you can hide a 629, you can hide one or, maybe two speed loaders.:)

Curious about your need for versatility in a holster. Please expand on the subject.

It isn't rare for me after work, to head out to my inlaws ranch and help out with what I can ( I imagine other members do the same. ) Sometimes I even get to do some shooting. Therefore something with a dual purpose use is very appealing to me.

Have a look at the Galco DAO. Sits straight up strong side, but worn crossdraw is about as comfortable as you could want.

Here is an example shown with my 45 Colt Redhawk.

Guys thanks for the simply rugged option however I have a few of their products and while they are a great product I'm looking for some more versatility.
You mean more versatility than a holster that can be worn strong side, cross draw, OWB, IWB, or on the chest?;)

Holster for S&W 629-5

If you cant find what you want I can make a pancake style that you can use for strong side or cross carry on a belt, and depending on bbl legnth use for CC.

What single holster would that be?

In the Simply Rugged catalog for large revolvers, that would be the Sourdough Pancake. It is a 3-slot pancake that allows strong side and cross draw. http://www.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Sourdough-Pancake™-.cfm?item_id=151&parent=669

You can have the holster punched with holes to allow the use of inside the waistband straps for IWB carry. http://www.simplyrugged.com/ecommer...aps-Chicago-Screws.cfm?item_id=183&parent=672

If you want to wear it on your chest, you can order the Chesty Puller straps. http://www.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Chesty-Puller-Conversion-System.cfm?item_id=160&parent=672

It's hard to get more versatile than that, with just one holster.

I should have said more diverse as in my collection, I have settled on an IWB design by ray of lobogunleather.com . He qouted me at 8 weeks , so in the mean time I am unretiring the SP101 :D

Three slots I have, mostly very high quality, only allow straight up or forward cant, strong side. As cross draw, again straight up, the three slot is just not suitable. My take then on a three slot is that it simply offers a choice of cant, strong side only. To each his own, but straight up cross draw doesn't work for me.

Certainly as it is your holster, you can do anything you want with it. However, as they say in the commercial, that's not how it works, but as you say, to each his own.

I don't see how that contributes anything or how you could be more dismissive. Let's talk about holsters.

Just talking about holsters, for clarity…

The holster is designed to be carried either strong side or crossdraw.
You certainly can have your opinion, and wear your holsters anyway you want, but the holster is clearly designed for cross draw use, and many use the holster that way. If it doesn't work for you, that's fine, carry on as you please.

I have my share of Simply Rugged holsters. I have pancakes of various brands of K, L frames, Python, maybe others...I would have to look. None of the 3-slots have a desirable cant in BOTH carry modes. In fact, it is rare for any of these holsters to have good forward cant. The attempt at versatility is probably the reason, aside from trying to make short barrel holsters work for wide gun belts.

Holsters, styles....

For a N frame 5-6" barrel you may have limited choices re: field/concealment holster.
A good shoulder rig may be a better choice for CCW, ;) .
The STU or maybe the "Dirty Harry" leather shoulder rig from Lawman Leather Goods could work. From what I know, the holsters are now made by a new firm/mgmt.
Other top brands for DA revolver holster/N frames include: Tex Shoemaker(they created the popular Deputy Rick holster for AMC's The Walking Dead). Galco, El Paso Saddlery, Bianchi Intl, Don Hume, Mernickle, DeSantis, Milt Sparks, Ted Blocker.
I think G Code holsters makes a N frame Kydex holsters but I need to check.
