Need to get a air rifle that will be fairly silent to get rid of a ground squirrel population that has overrun someone's yard. Used to have a Crosman 760 a loooong time ago, but I sold that. I'd like to get something at least as powerful, but that doesn't have to be pumped ten times each shot. Once would be nice.

I've seen the newer 1,000fps rifles they have out and they're pretty loud...I'd like to keep it pretty quiet since there are neighbors not too far away. I'm not sure on the caliber, but I suppose anything from .177-.22 would be fine. I used to have a .177 and it was plenty deadly. Thanks for any suggestions.

I use an RWS model 48 in .177 (1100 FPS, one pump) with beeman crow magnum pellets. Its scoped but I dont recall what scope I have on it.
The pellets are hollow points so even though they are only .177 they still have plenty of punch for critters.
This is a great air rifle for the price(about $400 without scope) its accurate enough to knock out the x ring and powerful enough to take critters.
You can spend thousands of dollars on air rifles....check out.... http://www.airgun-express.com/prodarea.asp?str=P2FyPTE=

OH....sorry.
I would save up some and look for a good quality used gun. No offense but you know the old saying you get what you pay for.....I just found a used RWS 48 for $250.
My air gun (along with my .22's) are my most used guns.Cheap to shoot, accurate and I can use them in my yard.

My $30 Crosman worked well back in the day. Even had a scope. Only thing I didn't like was having to pump it ten times. Wish I still had it though!

I was just looking at the Crosman 2100. Looks like they're a little over $50 now...I'm also starting to think BB's would kill them just as dead as pellets..at least that's how it worked with my old Crosman...plus you don't have to load BB's one at a time like you do pellets AND they're cheaper..still don't like the ten pump thing though.

BB's might not be as accurate either...

Crosman 760

This is what I used to have!!! When I was like 9-10 years old.. Only it came with a scope.. I sold it at a rummage sale for about $5 when I was 17-18 or so. I miss it

Yeah! I used to have a Crossman 760! Back then, they had wood furniture and were accurate, too! I bought a new one last year for my daughter and it is no where near as accurate as my old one. :(

Heh, yea I even dropped it on some concrete steps once. Thought I had broke it. Nowadays if you dropped one it would probably shatter..lol

Benjamin Sheridan Pump Pellet Gun .20 (5mm). Blue Streak and Silver Streak.

These things are powerful, the 5mm pellet will kill rabbit size game with ease. 700fps, excellent combination between flat trajectory and power. Very accurate. I've had one for about 30yrs.

About $125.00 to $149.00

Wow, those Sheridans haven't gone up that much over the years. I paid about 45 bucks for mine, but that was back in 1970! It's still one incredible gun and I love it. But at the level you would want to kill squirrels with, (4 or 5 pumps) it is quite loud. I haven't bought 5 mil pellets for a while either, I bet they've gone up a lot.

For $30, you can get a decent pump-up. Some places like Sportsman's Guide often sell "factory reconditioned" airguns at good prices.

I was hoping to spend like $30
The only spring piston ("one pump") airguns I'm aware of that sell for this are the low end ones from Red China. Sometimes they work.

I've got an RWS 48 in .177 myself, and can state that it WILL take care of cottontails, jackrabbits, armadillos, and felines. It's most accurate with RWS Superdome pellets.
