But I don't really want to spend the money for an aimpoint or eotech. Is there a less pricey option out there that isn't crap?

No, not really.

Sure, there are "range toy" grade RDS that will give you years of service at the range for under $100. My favorite example of these are the products sold by Primary Arms http://www.primaryarms.com/category.sc?categoryId=419.

I have 3 of these for .22 rimfires, and my kids airsoft guns. Work great!

However, these are not "weapons grade" (bet your life on them reliable, bat them across a gravel parking lot without loosing zero tough, submersible to 80 ft in sea water with 5 year battery life) and are not sold or advertised as such.

You bought a DD AR instead of a nice Hess / Vulcan right? Don't skimp on the optics. Save up and get an Aimpoint, EOTech, Trijicon etc (buy a gently used one or one of the non milspec versions and save your money there) and you won't regret it.

You get what you pay for, buy once cry once, YMMV.

Agreed.
If you coughed up the money for a DDM4, don't disgrace it by slapping on substandard optics. You're better off becoming proficient with iron sights, and then saving for a proper RDS like an Aimpoint. The Aimpoint PRO retails for $400 and comes with a mount.

If you absolutely MUST buy a less expensive optic, then look into the Vortex Optics SPARC or StrikeFire. They're workable optics, but no where near the capabilities of an Aimpoint in terms of durability, battery life, or combat-proven track record for reliability.

Thing is, you'll spend $150-200 on an optic that eventually you'll want to upgrade. That's $150-$200 that you could have put towards a proper optic in the first place. You may regret it, you may not.

You bought a top end AR, and now you want a cheap optic. Save up and buy an Aimpoint T1 or H1 from La Rue with there mount and never look back. Plus, if you decide to sell it down the road, your going to get most of your money back....
