I just picked up a 6 shot 12ga. 500A, pistol grip with a heat shield today at the gunshow for $319. After looking online, I've found a TON of places selling them cheaper, even the 8 shot models, but this one was in the right place at the right time so I bought it. I've only shot it 6 times (had big rain today, plus I didn't realize that even the little bank robber/gangbanger pistol grip shotguns came with the wooden dowel to restrict magazine capacity). Anyway, this is already my favorite gun I own. I love shotguns in general, I like how compact it is, how wickedly mean it looks, and more than anything, I love the sound of racking one in the chamber with a 12 ga. It's the sound and feeling of empowerment.

What's the difference between a 500 and a 500A? What's a good sling for this thing? I'll probably take it hiking on occasion until I replace the titanium .357 I traded off, so if they make some kinda sling with shotshell holders that adjusts really big were I could use it with my pack, that would work good. I'm not sure if a regular rifle sling fits the pistol grip guns as good, and no one at the gun show or stores I visited were selling slings.

I know the 500 and 590 are the only shotgun to pass whatever torture test the military conducts before adopting shotguns, but is there any common problems with these guns? I was just shooting cheap 2 3/4 #8 birdshot, so the recoil wasn't as bad as I expected, but I would imagine 3" buck would be rather unpleasant. Has any of you used a knoxx recoil-reducing pistol grip? There about $100 I think, so it's something that would be much farther down the road if I ever do get one, but if they work as good as the advertisements say, I can't see a reason not to get one eventually.

The dealer I bought mine from had another 500 without the heatshield, but it had the breaching muzzle thing, and also a pistol grip maverick 88 with the knoxx pistol grip. I almost bought the maverick instead because I knew the grip alone was $100, but I'm not familiar with the reliability of the mavericks, although I do know they're mossberg's economy model. All three of them were priced the same.

Another thing I was curious about is drum magazines. I seen one on gunbroker, and it said it was made by knoxx. Knoxx's website doesn't have them listed, so I don't know where you'd get one, or if they're even legal. I think they're 10 rd. I would imagine they're expensive, and probably wouldn't make much sense on a pistol grip shotgun, but the idea of a big drum on a pump shotgun is quite appealing to me nonetheless.

Also, is they're any legal things I'd have to consider if I ever decided to put a full stock on my gun in the future? I know on regular guns, it's usually illegal to shorten them or whatever if they came as a rifle originally, but I don't know if it would be any different legally switching back and forth from full stock to pistol grip on a shotgun. I'd just assume use the grip most of the time since I've still got an NEF single shot 12ga, but the 500 would be more accurate and practical with a stock on it, and hold 5 rounds more than the nef anyhow.

500A is the 12ga. 500C (IIRC) is the 20ga. 500 could be either.

knoxx sidewinder (drum mag conversion) is no longer being manufactured.

No legal issues with putting a real stock on. Do it. I've fired my 500A pistol-grip and full stock and full stock is better for any use I can imagine. Having tried both the only reason I'd go to pistol grip (or folding) is storage in an extremely space-limited place.
