I have deveoped a bad RH rotator cuff. :( Yeap I'm right handed too! :( Sooooooo I'm gonna have to stop shooting rifles like my .300 H&H and .30-06 and even .35 Rem.------ DRATS!!!!:what: Why I'm not even going to get to finish working up my custom .270 load!:cuss:
I knows youz guys shoots alots :)so my question is---
What light recoil centerfire cartridge would you recommend I go to to be able to keep reloading and shooting (mostly target 100-200 yard plus an occasional deer out around 100 yards?
I thought of 223 class, but is there anything in the 6, 7, 8 mm class that might suit me? I'm not familiar with all the new stuff since 1980 or after

Have you tried shooting left handed? I know not very handy but you never know till you try.
Have no answer for your other questions.

How about a 257 Roberts their soft shooting and fun to load for their also great if You ever wanted to Akley Improve the gun, does wonders for the 257 and still soft recoil, also I have a 30-30 Akley Imp . I have been loading hornadys new GMX Flex tip 140gn bullet with imr-4320 and its a eaily carrying light, easy to handle and its recoil is soft.

That's awful, Catpop.

There seem to be some nice offerings in 6.5 that I understand are a bit milder than a 270win, recoil-wise.

I have a friend who really likes his 260rem because of it's milder recoil. I'd like to try out something in 6.5-284. Grain for grain, many of the 6.5mm bullets have impressive BCs and SD.

Then there's the good old 243...

What about just trying some reduced loads for the rifles you already have? I always see them published, but I've never tried them.

Good Luck!

My sympathies for your shoulder, I know what it's like.

You should be able to handle 2000 fps with your 30-06 with a 150g bullet. If not, then it's time for plinker loads. 10-13g Red Dot/Unique/Bullseye with some Xtreme plated 30 cal 110g bullets can still get me a little over 1" at 100 yards with same POI as my 2500 fps 150g .308 load. If you cast, the Lee "soupcan" C309-113-F boolit is just the ticket until after your recover.

If you can handle 2000 fps with a 150-180g bullet in your 30-06, that's 30-30 power and good enough for deer at 100 yards.

Just try a limbsaver slip on your gun for some extra padding or try shooting with a thick jacket or one of those wearable pads. Looking a little "sissy" is better than not shooting at all or being exclusively relegated to "pew-pew" (22LR) shooting. Those Soviet peasants did OK with their heavy coats shooting the 91/30 without any recoil pad.

Sorry about your shoulder...
Since you won't be shooting out past 200 yards and hunting to only 100 yards why not give the reduced recoil loads published by Hodgdon for H4895 a try. You can still shoot your 30-06 but it will only feel like a .223.

I use a Caldwell Lead Sled for sighting in rifles, you can shoot all you want with no recoil to your shoulder. You can even nestle the butt-rest against your shoulder like shooting normally, and barely feel it.

Yawl really think I could download my super 30 to 223 recoil levels? Man that would be the cat's meow! Got any suggestions on bullet type, wt., powder selection for it.
And RC that over the shoulder stuff is what got me where I'm at now. Too many heavy propellers I guess! I've just got to start acting my age instead of my IQ. I ain't no spring chicken no mo u know.
Tx guys Catpop

Have you tried shooting left handed? I know not very handy but you never know till you try.

I have a cataract forming in my right eye but not bad enough for the doctor to operate. Last summer it was causing me lots of problems seeing prairie dogs so I switched to left handed for the three days of the hunt. Not ideal, but I had a good time, got my share of prairie dogs.

As dave from mesa said, it might be an option.

Sorry yo hear about you shoulder, hopefully your recovery goes well.

You have many options and opportunities perhaps to add another caliber. .223 is an easy choice, not the best deer cartridge but a well placed shot with the right bullet will work, treat it like a bow in terms of shot placement and choice, (broadside).
Brass is everywhere, bullets cheap, recoil. . .doesn't exist.

You could also get a really nice bolt action 6.5mm, but that is not cheap

I think I would have to agree with 'dave from mesa'.

A shooter once told me that "you believe you are a great shooter, until you shoot weak arm". I don't know if it is true, worth a grain of salt, or just stories being passed; however, it made me start shooting lefty on purpose on occasion.

I find it challenging but enjoyable, a twist to what I consider normal. I think I would make sure I would at least try this option before giving up on the big guns.

Maybe I'm just off my rocker though and speaking out of place?!

Either way, I'm sorry to hear about your shoulder. H4895 may just become your favorite powder!

You know, I might have a suggestion that will work quite well for ya. My daughter in law has been hunting with a .243 win. the last 2 yrs., actually the only two years of her life ever. Anyway, last year she shot her buck at 350 yds. right through the pump station, and nailed one this year with another perfect shot also over 300 yds.. So clearly, the .243 is a very capable long range cartridge. She has been using a 100 gr. PSPBT I reload for her and often shoots 300, 400, and 500 yds. at the range as well, and does very well. But for someone who deals with pain the result of a physical injury, the 100 gr. could be lightened up by 10-20 grs., thus decreasing felt recoil substantially more, and still be very effective for a practical hunting application.

My point, the .243 win. is very accommodating for those who are recoil sensitive, or other wise simply can't subject their selves physically to the recoil associated with 6mm Rem and up. And what's more, the .243 will handle most any task with the right component combination.

I liked 6mm rem as a kid, keep in mind this was a wood stocked rifle so probably heavier.

How about an ar 15?

6mmx45 uses 6mm bullets with a necked up 223 case.

25x223 is necked up and trimmed with 257 bullets.

I load and shoot the 6mm Rem. (Rem. 700 wood stock) quite a bit, and to me, the recoil feels much like that of the .270 win.. So I'm not so sure you would benefit from that as a substitution?

Look to IMR Trail Boss for reduced loads on paper. Definitly not for hunting (at least not deer size). Sorry to hear of your injury. Best wishes on a thorough recovery.

+1 on the lead sled. I use one all the time for load development.(270 way high on the h-4831) I don't have a problem yet nor do I want one as I just ordered a 300 win Mag. My job is to physical to chance it and like you I'm no spring chicken. Then with a lighter rifle and your own light load the occasional deer might not be a problem. Maybe use a shoulder recoil pad for the occasional deer.
Funny how I never feel any recoil with a live target in front of me.

( Edit) Of course this all depends on what your doctor tells you.

7-mm08 with a 120gr NBT loaded to 2700fps. Add a slip on recoil pad to your rifle that will help too. Kill deer accurate and easy on shoulder. OP I'm sorry about your injury is surgery and option that way you can shoot full power loads?

Why not .223/5.56 unless your state doesn't allow it for deer? It's perfect for 100-200 yd target shooting, easily out to 600 with the right equipment. It's easy and very inexpensive to reload.

I haven't seen anyone suggest it yet, but I'm also a 300 BLK fan. Shooting supersonic out of a 16" barrel is no problem out to 300 yds and it makes a good whitetail gun, especially up to 100 yds. In addition, it's also easy to reload with a number of different bullets available. You can buy cheap 5.56 brass or scrounge some up (LC recommended) and reform them yourself or buy already reformed cases for about $100/M. Just my opinion.

I guess I'm weird or something , but the ar platform just never turned me on. The idea of a new rifle, now that got my attention. Man I could almost wet my pants dreaming of that possibility! :uhoh:bAnd i could slip that by my baby doll for medical reasons. Heck might even get Doc to write a prescription for it. What do you think?
The 243 is one that is not in my arsenal and probably as old as I am.
I had forgotten I do actually own a mini 14. Ill carry it to the range thursday and see how that treats my shoulder.
Man, lots of possibilties here. Thanks so much. I'll keep you informed. Catpop
QUESTION: is there an apprecable amount of recoil reduction with a semi auto vs. a bolt action?
