1911 or P220

Get both, LOL. That's what I did, both are great guns and I love shooting them. I've got one P220 and 3 1911's and I rotate which one I take to the range. Both types are solid, accurate and reliable shooters. If I had to choose between one or the other I'd............... hell, I couldn't. :banghead:

Try both and see which fits your hand/needs (& budget) the best and go from there. Either way you can't go wrong.

I use 1911 for bullseye, IPSC, and offense type pistol.
I use my SIG's for defense carry due to no safety and DA first pull.

Both are fine shooters, but for my first I'd say 1911 would be my choice.

I own both and for just the range i'd choose the 1911. I just have more fun with that platform.

I will of course vote for the 1911. I have owned several Sigs and they are truly great guns (never a P220). If I had never been bitten by the 1911 bug I would own a P220 and be one happy camper.

They both are easy to clean, they are both easy to shoot..(at least I think so). You really do own it to yourself to try them both before you buy. You will not go wrong with either one.

Why not get a sig 1911 and have the best of both worlds?

Seriously though, they're both magnificent guns.

1911 first then p220 then more 1911s. They're both great Duty/SD guns. I could get by with either, but I own 10 1911s and one p220.

Yep, looking at 1911s this weekend, thanks for all the input fellas.

The Sig will have to wait for a few months ;)

Great choice. Take a look at the S&W E-Series that vander put a post up of, the STIs at DAwson Precision, and SA is great as well. Order a Brownells 1911 catalog and go nuts. :banghead:

I have owned both. Sold the Sig to finance another 1911.

I bought a SA Black Stainless Loaded and a S&WPD1911 Commander with the Scandium frame at about the same time. Thinking one for the range and one to carry. Both are good guns.

The SA had a fairly stout trigger, adjustable sights and all steel for good weight.

The S&W had fixed sights, much better trigger and was lighter for carry, not so much fun for a long range session.

5" all steel adjustable sights is my pick for the range.

Then there is the question of getting a 9mm 1911 for cheaper ammo. I have a Les Baer PII 9mm. Had some break0in issues with a poorly adjusted extractor, but runs like a top now. Less recoil, cheaper factory loads. I reload so it's not really as much of an issue on cost.

I'd choose the single-action goodness of a 1911 for range duty. However, the SIG P220 sits in my nightstand.

I just got a Springfield Range Officer for Christmas ($750 at LGS). It is designed for serious range use. Springfield states that this gun utilizes their frame/slide combination that they use on the more expensive competition guns. They say that only the basics are on this gun because they know most shooters have their own preferences when it comes to accessories, so there isn't anything on it that will be thrown away. The fit of the slide/frame is really tight. The Barrel & bushing are competition grade. The Trigger on my RO measures 4 Lbs. For the money it is the best range/competition start-up 1911 that I have seen. Oh, did I say that I'm just a slight bit biased?

Thanks, I thought it was a good buy as well. I had been looking at the Rock Island guns, but just couldn't warm up to them. When I picked up this gun I knew it was going home with me.

I plan on using this gun for the range only.

Nice 1911...

I think you'll enjoy the 1911 more, just MHO. The 1911 has "personality" while the 220 is just boringly and generically reliable. ;)

The 1911 will keep you active with constant tuning and theorizing as to why it's not shooting right.

The P220 would just bore you to death with shot-after-shot-after-shot reliability.

For what you want, sounds like you made the right call.

If you can beat CDNN's $650 deal on a P220 SAO (3 magazines, holster, night sights, rail, aluminum grips on an alloy frame) then I'd go with a 1
Mas Ayoob wrote an article (that's online) about the P220 SAO and was getting 1"@25yds with Federal 185gr Classic ammunition.
I have 6 1911s, but I really like the SAO model as a lightweight carry/nightstand piece.

So here was my decision!

SA Loaded Combat, thanks for all the input, the Sig will be what I'm saving up for next.

I love the P220, but I think I would vote 1911 for a strictly range gun IF the 1911 came with decent sights. If the 1911 in question has crappy GI sights I would pick the P220.

Why limit a gun to range only use? P220 makes a dandy SD weapon.

Well I already have 2 9mm range guns, a 9mm HD gun, and a 9mm ccw.

I wanted a separate gun for the range only.

Nice choice let us know how it shoots. I really like the blackend stainless look, but when I was looking all the ones I found were marked made in Brazil. So I setteled on a loaded parked one. Love it it's my regular nightstand gun.
