I'm trying to compile a list of shooters from literature.

By literature, I mean not just books, but stories, movies, any sort of fictional characters.

The reason I want them is that I am going to label the air rifles for my college rifle team with fictional character names, not numbers.

I want to reinforce the idea of rifles having specific individual characteristics with the names.

I need 8 names. Four for precision air rifles, and four for sporter air rifles.

Here are names of fictional shooters I've come up with so far.

Natty Bumpo
Bob Lee Swagger
Gus McRae
Quigley

(yeah, I know the following aren't rifle shooters, but still marksmen)

Odysseus
Robin Hood
Legolas

What are some other fictional characters known for their marksmanship?

Who's the hero of that series of British novels about a company of riflemen during the Napoleonic wars? It was even made into a TV series, but I can't place the title or name of the character.

But hit me with some other fictional characters known for their marksmanship.

thanks,

hillbilly

Well, he's not fictional, but there's a lot of fiction about him (including the recent movie "Enemy At The Gates") - Vassili Zheitsev.

Nelson Demille's Character - John Cory
James Lee Burke's Character - Dave Robicheaux

Not necessarily 'marksman' , darn sure are 'characters' and tend to hit what they aiming for...granted Corey was introduded as recovering from .44 wounds... but he redeems himself. ;)

John Clark and Ding Sanchez -- Clancy
Mitch Rapp -- Flynn
John Rambo
Martin Riggs
Blade
Allan Quartermaine
Neo
Ethan Hunt
El Mariachi

Some are more "spray and pray"

:D

"Two Jones" of Audy Murphy fame

Louis L'Amour books have many from the Sacketts, Jubal is one I remember.

Bowdrie, Catlow, Chancy, Hondo, Kilkenny, Lando, Galloway etc.

Josey Wales

Charley Waite (Kevin Costner character in "Open Range"

John Bernard (JB) Book (from "The Shootist")

Shane

Nathaniel/Hawkeye (from "Last of the Mochicans")

Jim

Matt Dillon

Tonto

Cisco Kid

Pancho

Tom Mix

Redeye

Deadeye

Gabby

Roy

Snidley Whiplash

Lash Laroo

Dusty

Everytime I send this, more come to mind. Better pick some quick and stop this insanity. I'll be thinking and scratching all night.

Hmmm, guys. IIRC, from my brief brush with real literature a l-o-n-g time ago, Natty Bumpo is "Hawkeye" from Last of the Mohicans" :neener:

You have a great opportunity here. Instead of naming the rifles after FICTIONAL characters, why not name them after REAL, historical American heros instead? This would both honor those heros and would encourage the students to learn more about the people the rifles are named after.

Here's one list of those who distinquished themselves with their "feats of arms." While it isn't exclusively limited to rifleman, it is weighted towards those known for their marksmanship. (Their are also more then a few Medal of Honor receipts in the list)

Ethan Allen

Daniel Morgan

Mary Ludwig Hayes

Joshua Chamberlain

Daniel J. Daly

Michael B. Ellis

Frank Luke

Samuel Woodfill

Alvin York

Vernon Baker

Richard Bong

William K Nakamura

Donald R. Burgett

Butch O'Hare

Audie Murphy

George T. Sakato

Robert H. Young

Carlos Hathcock

Gary Gordon

Randall Shughart

The list is arranged from the oldest conflict to the most recent and is alphabetical within each conflict. If you don't recognize a name, do a little research. These stories are amazing!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

As someone pointed out, Natty Bumpo from the Fenimore Cooper novels does have many names...One of the criticisms leveled against those books.

He is Natty and Hawkeye and The Long Carabine and Leatherstocking and all sorts of names.

Trebor, I considered using historical names. But I have decided against it.

I am an English instructor by trade. Hence, I would like to emphasize the literary instead of the historical.

Got lots more names to choose from now. Thanks to all.

If you think of any more good ones, post them.

Thanks.
