Need help putting a scope on a SA-58 FAL.

Ok, so I have a 16.25" DSA SA-58 FAL. First off, I was wondering if you guys even think its worth scoping it, it being a carbine and all...

but assuming it is worth it, I realize I have to buy the scope mount straight from DSA, right? When I do, what are my optics options?

My budget is $400, but less than that would be nicer. Any recommendations?

The best mount is from DSA. As for optics, what are you looking for? Close-range dot-sights or long range optics?

I went with a POSP 2.5-5x25mm scope for my STG58 and it works out very well. Well under your price range as well. It'll work for any range I feel like using the rifle for.

It is "worth" scoping it for the same reason it is "worth" scoping any rifle. I do like my iron sights but sometimes scopes are appropriate for a situation.

What do you want to do with it?

CQB - EoTech or Aimpoint

Long range - a bazillion "tactical" scopes are out there.

Both -- look at the CQT or Millett DMS-1

You don't "have" to buy the scope mount from DSA but they do make the best one

Here's what the 1st and 3rd choices look like on a 16" SA58. The 2nd choice just seems silly.

I use a Weaver 3x-9x Classic on mine. It's held up fine for a few years now. Maybe 600-800 rounds through the rifle. I use this same model scope on Mosin Nagants and Enfields. Never had any trouble with them.

The mount is an Armalite One Piece AR15 mount.

I believe I got the rail from TAPCO, back when they used to sell a lot of FAL stuff. It clamps on with four button head hex screws. I used some blue locktite on those screws and they have never come loose. You don't remove it unless you are doing major surgery on the gun. I have a DSA rail on my other FAL. They are pretty much the same except the DSA is finished better and has numbered slots on the rails. (I took the scope off the other one though because it's a Para and the scope just got in the way. Left the rail on it though.)

If you want to put optics on it, and you were able to save enough to buy the DSA in the first place, I'd say save a little longer and get whatever flavor of ACOG fits your needs.
