Hi guys,
For those of you that have 35 Whelen ammo either factory loaded or you loaded yourself I need the diameter of the necks on your loaded ammo.

I am getting ready to order a custom chamber reamer and I want a tight neck but having no 35 Whelen ammo (yet) to measure I need to know what the neck dimensions you guys are finding in factory and your reloads.

Reamer is also going to have tight base and I have those dimensions from 30.06 cases and also a throat taper that is almost half of what SAAMI calls for.

If you have FL 35 Whelen dies could you also measure the diameter of the case head .200 up from the rim on sized cases?

Many thanks

I measured one of my loaded rounds, Or should I say Reloads
The Loaded neck diameter is .381
The Base diameter is .4665

I dont know how close these are to the factory Spec's
But in my Lyman #48 manual they show the Base diameter as .4698

" Cartridges of the World " calls out the Neck Diameter as .388 and the base diameter as .470

Why are you not just buying a Standard Reamer and are building your own ?
That would guarantee that your dimensions are perfect, and Standard

Lags, yes you are right on the published material. SAAMI neck is .388-.390
and base dimensions can run from low .460s to .469 range but every new round of 30.06 I have ever measured is .465 and SAAMI calls for .471-.473 if I remember correctly. Thus you can see where allowing the brass to move the minimum amount will enhance case life and with the cost of brass not ever likely to come down one needs to plan for the long haul.haha

Thanks much for the measurements. It will be interesting to see what dimensions others come up with on factory and home brew cases.

Let me know if you need additional dimentions, as I have some Unfired Empty New Brass, and a 35 Whelen Reamer.
Plus, I believe I have a .35 Whelen Barrel sitting around here that I have not installed on a rifle. It is an Adams- Bennett F-54
I am also set up to be able to do a Chamber casting if you give me some time.

The only thing I would like more on the 35 Whelen is a Sharper Shoulder so I can Guarantee that the cases are headspaced in the chamber properly and uniformly.
But I have not had any issues with Loose chambers, effecting accuracy in any way.
I shoot the 250 Gr bullets ,and keep them reasonable with around 51.5 of IMR-4064

You are in luck my friend.
I just happened to have a Box of Fired 35 Whelens that has not been resized.
The fired neck measured .388 and the case Body is .467

I also remember that when I formed cases out of some Military 30-06 cases the neck was a little thicker when loaded due to the thicker Brass.

If I measure all the shells in the box, the biggest neck diameter is .3885.
And like you said, there could be spring back.
A chamber casting of a barrel will tell for sure, but I think you are probably correct.
