Hey guys.

I'm trying to help a friend get into reloading. He owns a LAR Grizzy in 45 Win Mag which is quite expensive to shoot if you use factory loads.

I'm having a little trouble finding trust worthy load data on this particular cartridge. I want to make a plinking round for him, mostly to show the cost savings of reloading. This means using a lead bullet, and staying at or below 1200fps to avoid leading.

Here is what we would like to use:
Starline Brass
Missouri bullets "softball" 230gr lead
Alliant 2400
CCI 300 primers
1.475" OAL

According to this site:

http://www.handloads.com/loaddata/d...&Weight=All&type=Handgun&Order=Powder&Source=

25.4gr of 2400 will put us at 1475fps with a jacketed bullet, which in my experience is a little too hot for this lead bullet. Would the starting load of 22.9gr put us in the 1200fps ballpark? Would this cycle the action reliably?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I have no idea, but I doubt you want to use 2400 for plinking loads.

One of my older Hornady #4 manuals has .45 Win-Mag data.

They show a 230 FMJ with.
11.6 Unique starting = 1,350 FPS in a Contender.

They also show a 2400 Start load of 18.7 grains giving 1,350 FPS.

Not even sure you can drive the MB "softball" that fast without leading.

But you can safely back off even further with Unique and still get a good burn at lower pressure if you have too.

Not so much with 2400.

With a BH of 18, leading shouldn't be a prob, at least not due to velocity. 18.2gr of 2400, pushing a Dardas 215gr LSWC at 1340fps leaves no leading in my .41M Blackhawk.

I suppose by "plinking" I mean an inexpensive lead bullet. I wouldn't want reliability issues by downloading the charge too much.

I can try working up a unique load. It seems no matter how hard I try to get away from unique, I always find some sort of use for it.

I'm also pushing the MBC .357 action around 1400fps with zero signs of leading. I just don't want to turn him off to reloading by leading up his gun.

I'd just pick up some regular FMJ bullets and load them to spec. .45 win mag is $27.95/box, plus shipping. Spending $8/50 for FMJ 230 grain bullets is a huge savings. Then you don't have to worry about loading the rounds too light to cycle the gun, or about leading.
