So a family member has been given an AK, specifically a Mak 90. I took it apart to clean it for him and found that the bolt was, get this, completely absent from the carrier/piston assembly.

Now these AK's came out of a guy's closet still packed in boxes wrapped in plastic and coated in cosmoline. Point is that it looks like the factory left out the bolt. I've sourced a complete bolt assembly for $100 but my question is, will it drop in like other AK's or will it require some gunsmithing?

I THINK, but I am not 100% on this, that the assembly will drop in, but the bolt itself (not entire assembly), will affect headspacing. Again, not sure, but I think this is true. Other guys on here will know for sure.

I would look online for a replacement bolt/carrier for a MAK-90. Being from the same type of rifle it should drop in and work. If you get one from another type of AK you might need a gunsmith to do some adjustments to it.

At least that's what I would do, plus you'll have the parts you need from a MAK-90. If it doesn't drop right in, take it to a gunsmith and have him take care of it. Go do a check on Gun Broker and see if they have what you need. You can also try eBay, it's just parts and that type of stuff is always there.

Good luck!

So can your run of the mill AK bolt be easily fitted to the Mak-90 or are the differences too major?

Also, assuming I were to buy a full carrier and matching bolt, would it work in the Mak-90 or would it require fitting?

I would say being that it's just an AK, the parts will just drop in and work. But you know how that would go, you'd buy the parts and they wouldn't fit. I would say that they'll be close enough to work or a gunsmith could work on it and have it running in a little while.

If you know anyone that has an AK, try their parts in yours and see how they work. Try cycling a couple live rounds if you don't have any dummies, don't shoot them, just cycle the bolt. If they go into the chamber and then eject without any trouble, that will help you out.

Other then that you'll have find the parts and go from there.

I have changed bolts out on European AK's with no headspace issues. I did stick with bolts made by the same country though and I haven't tried to mix and match between makers.

I would almost bet that a Chinese bolt will work with no issues, but the headspace must be checked.
