Zeiss Terra 3, 3x9x42 ….for $200 vs
Nikon Prostaff 5 2.5x10x42 for $230...

thinking about mounting on a .308 bolt gun. Thanks in advance.

That's a good price for the Terra. It's a better optic than the ProStaff.

I sold my Terra because I wanted better optical quality and I was willing to pay more to get it. But that doesn't make the Terra bad - it's a average optic for $300, and a better-than-average optic at $200.

Is the Terra used? Cause I thought they were discontinued. Maybe I'm wrong. I've owned plenty of Prostaffs and always recommend them for anyone on a budget. I'd say it's a flip of the coin though for me. It'd be cool to have an optic that says "Zeiss" without paying Conquest prices.

I own two terras and cant complain. The only Nikon products I've owned are both older monarchs....of my scope collection the terras would represent the low end.....I know nothing about the prostaff 5s

I will say, no matter how much a scope cost, as long a the glass is good, I've learned eye relief becomes very important in short range woods hunting....

Looking at a sauer XT 100, .308....22" barrel

Both scopes will be purchased new
the sauer is a long action so go with the one with the longer tube. both sold have good eye relief. if you can get your had on both that will help you to. i like those sauers, id like to try the mauser m18, it felt nice in my had when i looked at there 6.5 prc.

The sauer I'm looking at has now dropped to about the same as the M18.....I consider the two close kin....I think I like the sauer bedding a bit better......I've held both and the sauer seems a tad more polished....

I have. Euro rifle and am struggling w finding an optic. Cameraland has a couple Steiners on sale right now. IIRC reg 900 on sale for 600. I might get the Leupold vx3i. Of course my kids car went to the shop and needs over a K in repair....and the other kid needs more than that for school. Ol dad is kinda out of the fun market for a while. Oh well.

If you need closer ring spacing might want to look for a picatinny rail from NECG. They carry some import stuff.

So, with all the scopes I have on guns sitting in my safe....scoping may not be that big an issue....but these responses on the gun I'm considering are now more important......and this thread is giving the best response in that regard.

the m18 kinda gave me the feel of the browning A-bolt, the sauer stock looks better then the m18 and probably feels better to.

the only thing about the sauer 100 is the barrel is press fit, no threads. the m18 is threaded, i can confirm that first hand.
Still tho for 600 on sale id consider a sauer in the "expendable commodity" range. Shoot it till it's done then go find something else. A good scope can just move to what ever gets picked up afterwards.

I think the flanged mace bolt handles funny looking but otherwise it seems like a nice rifle. Might have to order a 7 since they are on sale right now.

I haven't used the Terra, so can't comment besides suggesting that in the 200 dollar price range id take a look at a Burris ff2, leupy vx-f, or wait/look for a sale on a higher end scope.
Between the two I'd take the Terra based on specs, and reviews

Ya the 7mms and up, for hunting rifle will last a lifetime off normal hunting. I like they both use rem 700 bases.

I am familiar with the barrel assembly differences for both guns and based on all the different forum conversation its always confusing which is which. I can not imagine shooting enough rounds that would cause me to wear a barrel out. What drew me to the Sauer (besides the price drop) is the 3 lugged bolt and the reputation of Sauer fit and finish as well as accuracy. My only experience with 3 lug bolt guns is the TC Icon, of which I own 2 and really like the accuracy and build quality.

Well I ordered my economy scope just a few minutes ago.
Redfield Revolution 3-9X 50mm
Think discontinued, but bud at LGS checked and found a distributor with a few.
Yes, I could buy online cheaper.
But they let me measure stuff there. So ordered my rings and scope from them.
A few bucks sure beats the headache of not getting stuff to fit right.

I'd have gone VX3i and may yet, but wanted to try a 50mm and this was an OK way to go.
Plus the kids car needs timing chain $$$.
Not going elk hunting this yr, so can upgrade scopes later.
if I do at all.
Really liked the 3-9X wide duplex Revolution 40mm they had.
Have owned three of the 2-7X and one 4-12X.
They were fine, only issue is click values. In one axis they were as stated. The other about 1.5x stated.
Was able to dial them all in. So no probs. Just something I noticed.
Gave one to my dad for his Rem 572 and one went bye bye on a Savage, another sits on my old yote AR my buddy bought.
