Have a local seller that wants to sell two like new Kimbers, a Stainless II and a Custom II for $600 and $500 respectively. Both guns are used and about a year and a half old, but only slightly.

What are your thoughts on these two handguns and the prices he's asking assuming they are like new as he describes?

Do they have the external extractor or internal? If External I would pass. If internal I would go for either (Depending on which one you like the looks of more.)

Could you possibly do a function check on them?

That isn't a bad price for either if they are in near new condition.

Not sure as I haven't seen the guns in person yet. Doing a function test is not likely as the seller lives in a residential area. I won't buy them unless I can field strip them though, so I'm not worried about that.

Seller is selling for quick cash to fund a motorcycle purpose, these are the only two he's selling, but the two I'm interested in.

How is Kimbers black finish, is it blued or what?

You can perform the function check without firing the pistol.

Click this link and maybe even print it out if you have to.

The black finish on the Custom II is called Black Oxide. It has held up fairly well on the slide and frame of my gun (The thumb safety, slide stop and grip safety have not faired as well..) but overall the finish is a bit soft. It wears somewhat easily.

I ended up swapping them out for stainless parts since they were nearly stainless anyway...

I'd get the black oxide gun. Kimber's stainless isn't as "stain less" as the steels that other manufacturers use, so you will still have to take care in maintaining it.

The Custom II is a fine firearm. I have one and it is accurate and reliable. Good looking too.

I agree with Big Bad wolf, to pass those up over external extractors is ridiculous

ya, i have a pro carry 2 wioth the external extractor and i love it.

in fact i prefer it. its probably the most consistent brass flinger in my collection.

I got the black one. Will post pics later if I can, I'm on my way back out the door.

$500 with walnut double diamond grips!

Sorry, no pics today. Camera has crapped out on me. But it looks just like kamagong, so see above.

Has a faint and I mean faint idiot mark on it, really have to know where to look for it to see it. Slight finish wear on the safety edge and typical wear on the grip safety that every 1911 black/blue finish I've seen has on it. The gun was very liberally lubed, but not perfectly clean. Underside of slide shows normal wear from shooting, maybe a few boxes of ammo through it. All in all, I'm satisfied for $500. Do need to get more magazines as it only came with one.

Anyone know if I can take the pad off the bottom of the magazine and have a flush fitting one?

If you're gonna' buy aftermarket 1911 mags, buy Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick. I find most all 1911 function problems are mag related & have had excellent service from both brands. Congrats on your new Kimber!
