I recently purchased a Remington 700 SPS varmint in .308. I now need to determine what glass to put on it. Currentently the longest range I have access to is 120 yards, give or take a few yards, so uber magnification is not necessary. This gun will see the vast majority of its action on the rifle range, maybe a rare trip to a friend's property for some long range play.

If money was not a factor, I would go all out and get a $1000+ dollar Leupold Mark 4 tactical. However, it is a factor, and a very important one at that, so I am leaning toward a Leupold VX-II 4-12x50mm with an LRD reticle. I think that that magnification would be plenty at 120yards. Anybody have any experience with these? Another option is the VX-III 4.5-14x50mm, but that one would tack about another $200 onto the price tag, so I am leaning away from it. Anybody have experience with these? A direct comparison would be ideal, but I'll settle for different opinions of the two.

I am not completely set on getting a Leupold, so other recommendations are fine too, but must be a 50mm objective with a bare minimum 12x magnification. I did have a Leupold rifleman on a gun that I sold a while back and I was delighted with it, so I am inclined to buy another Leupold.

I just purchased a rem 700 xcr and put a leupold vx-III on it. I was alwo wondering what one to put on it. Mine is a 3.5-9x40 and it gives a ton of light. If you are not hunting and just shooting then a 40 mm tube would save you money over a 50mm and when I looked there wasnt much of a difference between 50 and 40 mm during the day. the gunsmith said you shouldnt even need a 50 for hunting cause if you do your out too long by regulations here in NY. these leupolds are great quality adn will give you a ton of light. but if your just target shooting get a 40mm tube and get magnification you want which will save you money. The vx-III are better though. like the gunsmith told me as is true with any optics the more you pay the better they are. The only difference with the vx-II and-III is lense coating. hope this helps good luck. If you have any more questions just send me a message.

I can't advise you which scope to buy, but when you find one you like, check the prices at Arcadian-Sales.com. Jack there beats just about everyone by a wide margin.

I agree that a 40mm is better as well as the 50 requires higher mounts that force you to keep your head too high above the stock. This makes the gun a bit more difficult to shoot. I have a 6-18 VXII on my Remington 700 varment rifle and in 6 years, I have yet to have it loose a zero on me. The 4-12X should work fine and you should be able to spot a 30 cal hole in a piece of paper out to 200 yards.
