Ordered a replacement magazine spring from numrich hun parts. Found the original one had a kink in it while disassembling gun, so figured id replace it before it became an issue.

Well no one had a factory one in stock, everything back ordered. So checked numrich and they had a reproduction spring. It was six bucks so said what the hell.

Well got it in the mail today. As you can see its roughly 18" longer than the one that was in my rifle, but the coils are about twice as spaced. Not sure what to do here. Trim it? Wait for a factory to come back in stock and run thenorigional for now? Thoughts?

Install it and see if it works?
Srarted too, but seemed like ALOT of compression and about 2 feet hanging out the end vs 6-8 inches the factory hangs out. so figured id ask here before i get carried away. I was honestly thinking about letting 8 or 10 inches hang out the end and snipping it.

Would like to mention. The gun was made in 1980, so 40 years may have taken the life outta the old spring. Recently aquired the rifle from my father by means of bartering. Havent shot this rifle since i was a kid, dont think he has shot it in 10 years. So not sure how well the factory magazine springs one functions other than messing around with the 6 snap caps i own.

I did a full tear down and clean. I cannot beleive how nasty the action was, night and day difference in the trigger and how smooth it is though.

So the coils have twice as much room to compress. You can make certain by measuring the wire diameter and multiplying by the number of coils. That will tell you if it has enough room to compress in the mag tube. The answer will be correct regardless of the static overall length. Suggest strongly that you do this before cutting any coils.

Wire diameter:
Factory - .025
New- .027

Coil spacing
Factory- .2
New- .29

Overal diameter
Factory - .392
New- .45

The new spring is almost the same diameter as the mag tube. Was way off about double the coil space, its 1.45 time the spacing. But the wire gage is heavier and diameter is bigger (less deflecion?). I ended up leavin about 14 inches hanging out. Tried it and it was a bit stiff to load. Took 4 more.off and it appears to be feeding fine. I set the Factory spring aside incase i have issues.
