As long as it is a fighting caliber, any qualtiy weapon with good bullets will do the job if you do yours.
Idealy your fighting handgun is the same as your competition, or practice weapon. Or at least a copy. If not, next best would be of same action. IE. Glock 19 for fighting, Glock 34 for competition.
A light is always a plus. Always. When ever possible, us a long arm. A long arm is ALWAYS the preferred weapon for a firefight (fighting calibers a given. For most long arms that is almost any centerfire cartridge). Always.
Only an amateur would go to a probable gunfight with a handgun given a choice. Particularly on your own ground. Once again a light is always a plus, always.
ALWAYS know your own ground, intimately. Don't go looking for a fight when a fight is coming to you. Dig in.
If you don't know whether some one is in your home or not. You don't know your ground well enough.
Go figure.
