Ready to buy a new handgun. Trying to figure out what to get. I've got several Glocks in 9mm and 40 S&W, a Kahr PM9 and a couple of Sigs (P226 and P220). I also have a Browning Buckmark.

Been thinking of a 1911 (probably a S&W 1911) or a .357 Magnum revolver (GP100 6 inch SS). But, a Glock 21SF sounds good too. Don't own any XD's or H&K's. Not sure the XD, S&W M&P buy me anything different compared to my Glocks.

This would be primarily a range gun but could also work for home defense. Have the smaller Commander size 1911's gotten better on reliability?

I'll be keeping the outlay less than $1000 and will need a new holster to go with the purchase.

A 1911 would be a good addition to your collection.

If you don't have any revolvers the Ruger .357 would be a good place to start. You should have at least one revolver.

For me, the XD doesn't, but the M&P has better grip angle and shape (which can be adjusted), as well as a little better (perhaps different might be a better word) trigger action.

Also take a look at CZ's pistols. They are DA/SA - either with decockers or manual safeties - though. Manual safety models can be carried cocked and locked. But my own (a 75D Compact PCR) is accurate and reliable, as well as saving $40-$50.

See if you have a range in your area where you can rent and try several on your list.

Just might help in the decision-making process.

Good hunting,

DFW,

I'm in the DFW area too. Not sure if DFW Gun Range has a variety of 1911's or not. Any suggested ranges that have have SA Loaded, TRP, S&W 1911's as range guns?

+1 on taking a look at the CZ line up of pistols. i think they are really nice, and they are different from what you have.

Hard to go wrong with a nice 1911 too. personally, i prefer other designs, but nothing at all wrong with a 1911. smith & wesson makes a pretty good one from what i've heard, but i am too familiar with the 1911's.

Dang tx golfer, you have some really good choices here. making it a hard decison. again it is not a bad choice to go with a gp 100. outstanding revolver. every collection needs a good .357. please let us know what you end up with. and post pics if you can!

with what you have in mind, i don't think you can go wrong no matter what you select.

check out the loaded sa line of 1911's and depending on how much you want to spend the operator line.

.357 Magnum revolver (GP100 6 inch SS).
everyone needs a wheel gun.

Not sure the XD, S&W M&P buy me anything different compared to my Glocks.
shoot the xd and you will see the difference. btw the m&p ergos are great but i prefer the xd to all other polymer handguns handdown.

i would get in this order if i were you
1911
.357 revolver
xd

TxGolfer,

You might want to try / call the Bullet Trap in Plano. They have a pretty big selection of rentals.

Here's their website: http://www.bullettrapinc.com/

When you call to bypass their extremely long message, just hit 8 to get a live body on the phone.

Let us know what you find out or decide on.

Have fun,
DFW1911

It looks like you lean toward the semi-auto side of the page, but if you're looking for a wheelgun, I agree with MustangHowie, the Ruger GP100 is a wonderful revolver in .357 mag.

I will NEVER, EVER own another 1911 that has a barrel shorter than 4.25 inches! I've owned a Springfield Micro and a Para P10 and BOTH were POS "Jam-A-Matics!" My IDPA club tried to warn me before the purchase. Then when things started going wrong (constant FTFs and FTEs) I got some of them to fire the guns from the line after a match just to see if there might be a problem with ME (limp wristing etc) and it happened to all of the board members, all of which are also NRA Instructors as well as IDPA ROs (like myself). When the problems replicated themselves in shooter after shooter, I left and all I heard was a chorus of "WE TRIEEEEED TO WAAAAARN YOU!" for months thereafter.

IMHO, if you're not already highly trained and practiced on a 1911, it makes a poor dedicated HD gun.

I'd highly recommend the new H&K P30 9mm or the new H&K 45. Possibly more robust and reliable than the Glock -- The H&K 45 was codesigned by Larry Vickers who is famous as the first unit armorer for the CAG (Combat Applications Group) aka "Delta Force." Bot of them can be had from Impact Guns for around $800 new. That leaves plenty for a holster.

If you are already expert on a 1911, then I'd suggest either a Kimber or a NightHawk....but then, you'd already be aware of those.

I am a GP100 kind of guy; if I could only have one handgun, period, it would be a GP100. My one handgun that I would not sell for any sane amount of money is one of my 4" GP100 sixguns, the one that played an integral role in my seeing and smelling flowers today instead of pushing up flowers from below.

Get something unusual, it's that time of year. Like a S&W TR325, or Walther P5, or Tok TT. Everyone knows a guy that has that unusual but cool gun, be that guy.
