N: “when y’all are target practicing/shooting we need to call and schedule a good thing with us so you don’t scare the horses. We’ll call the cops to report you if you don’t (they actually did once, cops came over, over the top of or backstop btw, said we weren’t doing anything illegal or unsafe and then left).”

Also N: “we found a deer on the property, (same one as before) could you please shoot better so they don’t come on our property and die? And no, you can’t come look for them on our property.”

I’ve tried to be accommodating, even doing the whole calling and scheduling before shooting thing but man, if were such an inconvenience to live next to we’d be happy to buy you out... oh... wait.... you turned that down too.

No options there.

I feel for you. I’ve had a trouble neighbor that terrorized the neighborhood, including a run in with me that resulted in a court appearance. I won :)

The problem solution started when I moved. I sold my place to a county deputy sheriff who was well aware of the local nut job. The nut job moved within a couple years thanks to the deputy heat. I’ve visited the deputy and other old neighbors years later and everyone is happy!

Unfortunately, I cannot give you any advice to solve, only how to deal, which is always a compromise into your life.

I've dealt with crazy neighbors twice in my life. I hope never to have that predicament again.
Assuming you are within the law, I'd let them rack up a few instances of calling the law, assemble the police reports, and then hire a lawyer to explore your options to prevent further harassment. Actually, consult a lawyer FIRST.
OR, perhaps you could offer to purchase some ear plugs for their horses?

I’ll probably just continue to do what I’m doing. Eventually LE will get tired of them complaining.

How often do they ride those horses?

Shoot enough around horses and they won't even flinch after a while. This would be a good thing for your neighbors, cause their horses won't bolt at "ANY" loud noises. You're doing them a favor.

You tried to do the right thing. They are not paying your bills. Tell them to pound sand. Keep notes and if they escalate might be time to sue them.

I've always said, "you cant pick family or neighbors". Are you the owner of the property you hunt/shoot at? If so and the cops have been called, you should probably call them and ask if you need to be harassed every time you shoot. It might work better if they were the ones to tell the neighbor in person that you are doing nuttin' wrong. My oldest son has a similar issue with the neighbors and after a while, the person on the cop side of the phone told them they were SOL before it even got to the visit.

That said, sugar attracts more flies than vinegar and even if they aren't being "neighborly" you still can.

I don't see what they could be sued for and telling them to pound sand is not going to settle anything. If anything it will escalate things. Odds are, they aren't going away anytime soon. Getting in their face and telling them of.f would be the last thing I would do.....but while it would be the last thing I would try, if all else failed, I would do it. It might even work better if the cops were there at the time.

Watch a few episodes of
Fear Thy Heighbor
Ship can go deadly wrong with neighbors like that.
I live fight in the city of Arlington Washington and wee got a new neighbor a few years ago that started out like the one you have. First few dsys after they moved in he had a few words with the old lady.
The next day I come home from work he was out in his yard so I called to him and said I need to talk with him.
When he came over I asked him if he ever wached (Fear Thy Neighbor).
He said no, I told him to get netflex or any of them other tv options and watch a few episodes. And if he ever talks to my old lady like that again we will be on thst show and it wouldn't go that well for him.
And I told him that if his dog ever jumps the fence in to our yard he'll.be given back a dead dog.
That was the last bullship with him.
If you don't take care of these arigant azzwipes right off the bat things escalate. And dome times what ever you do still won't calm things over.
Years ago we had a nut job that moved in right across the street from our place and it almost went to the TV show.

I said if they escalate things. Like harassing phone calls, constantly calling the police, they could up it and start messing with vehicle's. Actually had neighbors do this in the late 90s. Found nails behind tires, dead squirrel in mail box, broken glass in our back yard, oh and the constant harassing phone calls. They where still are alcoholics.

I am generally respectful of our neighbors. At home, I don’t shoot too early, or too late, during church services on Sunday, etc. I have still had the Sheriffs dept come out when we were playing with machineguns though. I have never made a call to let someone know I was going to be shooting unless it was to invite them to participate.

Similar at our farm, most of our complaints from neighbors asking for us to kick the Sheriffs department off the range we allow them to use. Yeah, they come to us vs calling the people doing the shooting.

If it’s legal, it’s legal. That doesn’t mean you should be a bad neighbor or let your neighbors dictate what you can and can’t do on your property. (Note: If it’s not your property and you are an invited guest, you might become easier to replace than the owners neighbors).

If their horses scared your dog, would they call you everytime they were riding them?

In anycase, the animals will become acclimated to the sounds over time, remember there are people that shoot of the backs of these animals. Unfortunately your neighbors likely won’t. They will do one of two things, either quit calling or become, “It’s the XXXXX’s” again.” at the Sheriffs office.

I also own my own range on my place, complete with steel and target berms that go out ton 760 yards. Luckily I have no issues with my neighbors, one also shoots and the 2nd is a deputy sheriff that's planning on building his own range. Out in the sticks it's like I'm surrounded by folks that shoot, but it also seems like everyone is pretty considerate about times.

While it's true I can legally do as I please as long as every projectile remains on my property, I'm also cognizant of the fact that no one (myself included) wants to live next to a range. So I limit my shooting to a few days a week and only at "normal" times, NET 0800 MON-SAT and 0900 on SUN. I only practice the low light stuff in the spring and fall when sunset comes early. Occasionally I'll have the guys from work out or some of the guys I shoot matches with to practice some specific stuff. Those sessions generally last hours and 1000s of rounds.

So far, so good, zero issues.

Personally I'd try the sugar approach......right up until the other guy gets unreasonable. I bought my 80- acres with the intent of building a range, it took years to find a place with the right terrain to allow me to get my long range practice in safely, so it's going to get used. I'd have a talk with the neighbors 1st and a lawyer 2nd. Make sure you have your ducks in a row. A guy a couple miles from me didn't, built an extremely nice range and was doing some pretty intensive shooting, teaching classes, shooting at odd hrs etc. Got into a pissing contest with his neighbors, who collectively went to the sheriff's office. Turns out he didn't have the required permits (teaching CCW classes = commercial use) and was issued a cease and desist order.

I suppose one reason I don’t have issues with neighbors at home is my wife. If I’m not bothering her, I’m not likely to be bothering people off our property. Generally suppressed stuff or my homemade noise abatement device if there is going to be sustained centerfire rifle shooting, in the backyard.

I don’t do this at the farm, then again she’s not there when I’m shooting. :)

Ask them if they could pick up their horse manure before the wind starts blowing your direction, it’s offensive to the nose.

All kidding aside, I agree with @jmorris do your best to be good neighbors, but it is your property enjoy it in the way you desire within the laws. It’s a free country!

I will do as I please on my own land because I can. I'm sorry if the neighbor doesn't approve.

The neighbor lady next to our private range asked us to "call" because her dogs does not like guns and she like to take him inside when we shoot a lot. She asked in a neighborly way and so we call, in a neighborly way. She also keeps an eye on the property when we aren't around. Early last fall my DIL held a political fund raiser on the land. It was a Pro 2nd rally too. This property is miles from the closest town and most properties are 40 acres or more. Ours included. while no one in the area had issues with us shooting during daylight, the cops showed up about 9:30 and told us the loud Blue Grass band hired for the event was fine till 10:00. Seems there is a township ordinance against excessive noise even in the middle of nowhere. Lots of things my neighbors do out there and where we live in town here that I don't approve of. That's their right as long as they stay legal. Neighbor lady likes to let her cat run free and it likes to hunt the bird feeder in the backyard. Told her several times about it and she claimed her "kitty" doesn't leave her yard. I asked her then if she didn't mind me live trapping the "feral" cats that must be doing it instead and she said go ahead. Should have seen her face when I showed up on her porch with her cat in the trap.

I had a neighbor who used to claim the shot from my skeet shooting was hitting her house. And, I might've believed her if her house wasn't 500 yards away at a 90 degree angle to my shooting! Eventually I explained to her and her grandson in clear and simple terms that I would shoot what I want, when I want on my own land. The local sheriff (a good friend and gun nut himself) assured her that it was my right and privilege to do so as well.

I might add that I do not shoot at odd hours, or until after noon on Sundays. Her fussing was unwarranted, as were her grandson's veiled threats. She has since moved, and fare-thee-well. Her laggard grandson still lives there, but is either never home or too drunk to care. He also had some cattle that kept getting out onto the road and other people's land, mine included. That's another story.

Bottom line: your land, your rules. They've no right to pester you so long as you're not breaking the law. If you've friends in local, law enforcement, I recommend you apprise them of the situation. Trust me, it helps a lot. And even if you don't know any of the officers, call the department and ask to speak to the man in charge. It'll go a long way to helping you should they be called out. And finally, if the neighbors continue to aggravate you, tell them and their nags to get stuffed.
